John Foster is a country singer from Addis, Louisiana, who rose to national attention on the twenty-third season of “American Idol.” A lifelong church musician, he spent much of his teens helping at his family’s meat market before deciding to audition for the ABC talent show, bringing an easygoing cowboy-hat vibe and a love of classic country to Hollywood Week. Judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and guest mentor Carrie Underwood praised his “old-school” authenticity, and week after week he won votes with performances ranging from George Strait ballads to a playful Disney-night take on “The Bare Necessities.”
Foster’s most talked-about moment came on April 20, 2025, when he performed his original song “Tell That Angel I Love Her” in memory of his friend Maggie Dunn, who was killed in a 2022 car accident. The tearful tribute drew a standing ovation and cemented his place in the Top 3.
