Wendy Williams ‘Not Returning to Talk Show, Sherri Shepherd Set to Take Over Permanently’
According to reports, Sherri Shepherd is in advanced talks to become the permanent host of The Wendy Williams Show.
Wendy Williams has not appeared at all during the currently airing 13th season as the veteran host continues to recover at home from ongoing health issues. Several guest hosts have filled in in Williams’ absence, with former The View co-host Shepherd being one of the frequent replacements.
As first reported by TMZ, Shepherd is said to be finalizing a deal with Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury to become the show’s “permanent guest host.” However, Deadline later added that sources suggest the role would be “permanent host.”
The Wendy Williams Show debuted in 2008 and has gone on to become one of daytime TV’s most popular shows. However, in recent years, Williams’ long-time battle with the autoimmune disorder Graves’ disease has seen her take several hiatuses from the show. The Daytime Emmy-nominated host has not appeared on screen since 2020.
“Wendy continues to be under medical supervision and meets with her medical team on a daily basis,” the show previously stated. “She is making progress but is experiencing serious complications as a direct result of Graves’ Disease and her thyroid condition. It has been determined that more time is needed before she is able to return to her live hosting duties.”
According to Variety, a source said, “We’ll deal with the fall when we get there, but [Williams] is not returning this season,” before adding that she is “incredibly grateful for all of the guest hosts who have held down the fort.”
In addition to Shepherd, guest hosts have included Leah Remini (Kevin Can Wait), Michael Rapaport (Life & Beth), Whitney Cummings (2 Broke Girls), Fat Joe, and Devyn Simone. Next week’s shows will be hosted by former BET reporter Terrence J and former Fashion Queens co-host Bevy Smith before Shepherd returns the following week.
