YouTube sensation Rachel Bloom hits a pitch-perfect note with her new musical/comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Bloom stars as Rebecca Bunch, an up-and-coming New York lawyer who ditches city life to move across the country to West Covina, California, in hopes of reconnecting with her childhood crush, Josh Chan (Vincent Rodriguez III).

“She’s somebody who just can’t admit to herself how unhappy she is,” says executive producer Aline Brosh McKenna, who cocreated the series with Bloom. “And Josh represents a more innocent, free time in her life.”

But Rebecca’s obsession with Josh goes to extremes tonight when she learns about his new yoga-instructor girlfriend, Valencia (Gabrielle Ruiz), and attempts to insert herself into their lives by trying to learn yoga and stalking them at their favorite nightclub. Rebecca also breaks into a fantasy song-and-dance sequence—including a grand Bollywood-inspired number—to cope with her feelings.

“The songs are there as a great comedic and emotional enhancement,” says McKenna, who adds that there will be two to three new numbers per episode. “It’s all about Rebecca trying not to deal with the real reason that she came to this place. Being obsessed with someone and making choices for them is the most relatable thing in the world.”
