On Thursday, Netflix released the trailer, key art and first images from Part II of Season 1 of The Get Down, Baz Luhrmann’s drama set in the 1970s amid the birth of hip-hop and the changes in the music and cultural scene of New York City.

The Get Down Part II picks up in 1978, one year after the events of Part I. The sweeping upheaval of late ’70s New York finds an as-yet-unnamed new pop-cultural force (what our characters call “The Get Down”) striking a new beat in the Bronx, while disco still reigns supreme. Young lovers Books (Justice Smith) and Mylene (Herizen F. Guardiola) are caught in the swirl of a looming cultural revolution, but they have this moment to make their mark. Amid the backdrop of a bankrupt New York City, ruthless gangsters and money-hungry record label bosses, they discover it’s only their creativity and love that will carry them through.

The trailer kicks off with a Behind the Music-style look back at the era and The Get Down Brothers, making them seem like a real group (though the group is fictional, it is an amalgam of formative hip-hop groups of the era) as it reacquaints us with the characters before heading into drama-filled scenes from Part II.
