The Vampire Diaries co-creator Julie Plec developed this CW limited series based on the Belgian show Cordon. The plot follows the first responders, government officials, and civilians inside and outside a quarantined area of Atlanta amid a viral outbreak.
Helix
In this Syfy series, a CDC team travels to an arctic research facility to investigate a potential outbreak, only to realize that the virus and its variants were intentionally created by scientists with God complexes.
Jeremiah
A Showtime drama starring the late Luke Perry, Jeremiah takes place 15 years after a plague wiped out nearly every teen and adult in the world. Now, a group of survivors tries to rebuild society from their refuge in a NORAD complex.
The Last Ship
Eric Dane’s post-Grey’s Anatomy career took him to this TNT drama, in which he plays the captain of a Navy battleship unaffected by a global virus that killed 80 percent of the world’s population.
The Rain
In this Danish post-apocalyptic drama, a pair of siblings search for their father six years after a rain-borne virus takes out almost everyone in Scandinavia. They have more than one reason to find their dad: He might be able to guide them to a cure.
The Stand
A government lab loses control of a virus which then ravages the global population, and the survivors are torn between world leaders embodying good and evil. Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, and Rob Lowe starred in this ABC miniseries, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name.
The Strain
After cowriting the Strain novel trilogy, Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro and novelist Chuck Hogan co-created this FX horror series, in which a CDC team investigates an outbreak related to an ancient strain of vampirism.
Survivors
This BBC series, based on the Terry Nation novel of the same name, follows a ragtag group of people who escape a fatal “European flu” outbreak but struggle to survive a world without infrastructure or law.
The Walking Dead
AMC’s long-running hit drama, an adaptation of the comic book series, follows the survivors of a world overrun by zombies, one in which the humans are often more monstrous than the so-called walkers.
Z Nation
Though this Syfy series didn’t give that other zombie show a run for its money, it featured a different, mission-driven premise: A group of survivors must travel from New York to California with the only man known to have survived a zombie bite.
