What’s Worth Watching: ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’, ‘Confirmation’, ‘Saturday Night Live’ and more for Friday, April 15 & Saturday, April 16

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Friday, April 15, Netflix): Lucky Kimmy. If this berserk exercise in stylized absurdity from 30 Rock‘s Tina Fey and Robert Carlock had aired on NBC as originally planned, this second season almost surely would never have happened. But Netflix rescued it, ordered a second round without blinking, so dig in for another immersive 13 episodes of uneven but inspired lunacy surrounding the eternally optimistic Kimmy (Ellie Kemper of the infectious grin) and her band of quirky urban misfits, including the outrageous Tituss Burgess, 30 Rock vet Jane Krakowski and the blissfully strange Carol Kane.

Confirmation (Saturday, April 16, 9/8c, HBO): In the tradition of Emmy-winning political docudramas Recount and Game Change, HBO delivers another riveting docudrama that, much like FX’s recent People v. O.J. Simpson, recreates a media spectacle that had us glued to the TV: the incendiary 1991 hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas (a fiery Wendell Pierce), during which law professor Anita Hill (a moving, restrained Kerry Washington) testifies about her former boss’s alleged sexual harassment, knowing the likelihood that “when someone comes forward, the victim tends to become the villain.”

Saturday Night Live (Saturday, April 16, 11:30/10:30c, NBC): Before she started collecting Emmys (seven in all so far) for her sitcom work on Seinfeld, The New Adventures of Old Christine and, currently, Veep, which is back next weekend, Julia Louis-Dreyfus was a cast regular on SNL from 1982 to 1985. She’s back as guest host for the third time, primed to mock a political season that makes the antics on Veep look tame. Musical guest is Nick Jonas, his first solo appearance minus his brothers.

Inside Weekend TV: Cable’s Nat Geo WILD goes to the dogs with a weekend-long “BarkFest” of canine-centric specials, including Friday’s Who’s Your Doggie? (10/9c), which uses DNA analysis to trace the roots of mystery mutts, and Sunday’s self-explanatory How Dogs Got Their Shapes (9/8c). … HBO’s always-provocative Real Time With Bill Maher (Friday, 10/9c) welcomes two outspoken guests: Ariana Huffington at the top of the show, and actress/activist Susan Sarandon for the mid-show interview. … As Starz’s Outlander (Saturday, 9/8c) settles into Paris, Jamie (Sam Heughan) meets with exiled Jacobite leader Prince Charles (Andrew Gower), but not all is bonnie in France.
