A new Dead has dawned.

Fear the Walking Dead, the highly-anticipated companion series to the hit AMC drama The Walking Dead, finally premiered on Sunday night, introducing viewers to the beginning moments of the zombie apocalypse in Los Angeles. We also met high school guidance counselor Madison Clark (Kim Dickens), her boyfriend and English teacher Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis) and her children Nick (Frank Dillane) and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) as they came face-to-face with the true horror associated with this mysterious disease.

But where does this blended family go from here? “Season 1 is not Escape from L.A.,” quips showrunner Dave Erickson. “We will be invested in our locations, our neighborhood and our world for a good length of time. There are some twists and turns that prevent us from any kind of exodus from the city.”

The first order of business for Madison and Travis will be reuniting their entire family following their encounter with the fresh “infected” in the Los Angeles river. Not only does that mean finding Alicia, but also locating Travis’s ex-wife Liza Ortiz (Elizabeth Rodriguez) and son Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie). That search leads Travis to cross paths with barber Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades) and his daughter, Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) in next week’s episode.

“It will be a matter of circumstance that brings them together and then forces them to stay together,” Erickson says. “It was interesting for us to be able to do a slow build and actually see the process that brings varied people from different backgrounds under one roof.”

Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
