Jamie Reagan’s ‘Boston Blue’ Debut: What to Expect When Will Estes Returns

Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) returns to the Blue Bloods universe in Boston Blue Season 2, premiering October 9 on CBS. As TV Insider previously reported, Estes makes his debut in Episode 5. Here’s everything you need to know about his return.

Boston Blue follows Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg), the eldest Reagan brother, in his new life in Boston after moving there to be closer to his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen, played by Andrew Terraciano in Blue Bloods). Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) helped launch Boston Blue in the series premiere, as did Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), and Henry Reagan (Len Cariou) and Joe Hill (Will Hochman) made appearances in Season 1.

Jamie and Eddie’s (Vanessa Ray) baby, son Joe Francis, was revealed in the first season, and now Jamie is coming to visit his big brother in Boston in a “one-off story” that will take the brothers on a bit of an adventure, according to Boston Blue co-creator Brandon Margolis.

“As of now, this is a one-off story with Jamie, but we were just so thrilled because Will is someone who we’ve long admired and wanted to work with, and we were trying to figure out what’s the right story to tell,” Margolis told TV Insider in our Boston Blue Season 2 preview. “So we were thrilled he was willing to come play with us and we got a chance to revisit Jamie’s character and check in with where he’s been since our show started.”

Jamie’s appearance is an opportunity to update Blue Bloods fans on his life since the series ended and since Danny and Sean moved. (Sean’s brother, Jack Reagan, now in medical school, is in Africa working with Doctors Without Borders and has not appeared in the series so far, but “it’s possible” that will change in Season 2, co-creator Brandon Sonnier told us.)

Blue Bloods cameos are “always fun ways to check in and see how they’ve grown and what they’re going through,” Margolis said. “And then obviously to get him to see how his brother, Big Brother Danny, has changed and what’s going on in Danny’s life was just a lot of fun.”

“Will’s just such a cool dude and a really professional, lovely human,” he added. “So, it was really fun to get to know him.”

Sonnier told us that, like with Erin’s appearance in Season 1 Episode 16, Jamie “visits his brother in Boston and as we are wont to do, we put him in some shenanigans.”

Wahlberg revealed Estes’ guest-star spot on Instagram on August 7 after fans spotted the actors on set together in Boston on August 6. Wahlberg shared a photo of himself and Estes with Amonsen, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Marcus Scribner filming a scene inside a restaurant. “Welcome (back) to the family!” he wrote. Ray visited the set not long after, but it was only to see the cast, not to film anything. However, Jamie’s appearance implies the possibility of Eddie showing up as well at some point this season. Plus, the Brandons confirmed that there will be more Blue Bloods cameos in the second season beyond the ones who have already been announced.

Cariou will be the first Blue Bloods cameo of Season 2 when he appears in the premiere, during which he helps Danny, Lena, Sean, and Jonah on a case involving a Boston Strangler copycat killer.

Margolis confirmed that Jamie, Pops Reagan, Baez, and Elena will not be the only Blue Bloods stars in Boston Blue Season 2.

“Beyond those names that we’ve listed, we cannot confirm anybody,” Margolis told us. “We can only tell you the confirms. Yes, there will be more, but those are the ones that we can guarantee.”
