‘Boston Blue’ Season 2: Sonequa Martin-Green Teases Lena & Danny’s Next Big Challenge

Former NYPD detective Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) made Boston his new home in Boston Blue Season 1. In Season 2 of the Blue Bloods spinoff, he’s building on that foundation with his son Sean (Mika Amonsen), girlfriend Detective Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), and her daughter, Elena (below, with Wahlberg’s Danny; Elena is played by twins Eleanor and Penelope Yataco). As Baez prepares to move to Beantown, Danny reacclimatizes to having a kid around the house.

His partner, Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), also deepens his ties to Boston: “The events of [Season 1] were a point of no return for both Lena and Danny,” Martin-Green tells us. “For Lena, the near-death experience brought about a new sense of identity.”

Lena has healed from her gunshot wound and is back at work, but the mystery of who attacked her beau, Detective Brian Rodgers (Ryan Broussard), is ongoing. She gets a lead in Season 2’s opener, while a manhunt for a Boston Strangler copycat killer keeps them extra busy with help from Sean, Jonah (Marcus Scribner), and Henry Reagan (Len Cariou).

There’s a slight time jump between seasons. How have Danny and Lena been changed by the events of the Season 1 finale?

Sonequa Martin-Green: Oh, the changes are significant! In many ways, the events of the first season were a point of no return for both Lena and Danny.

For Lena, the near-death experience brought about a new sense of identity. It gave way to deeper healing, newfound freedom, and security. It also allowed her to open herself up to starting a relationship with her Dad [Chris, played by Erik King] and half-sister [Kristina, played by Alisha Wainwright]. And all the while, Danny and Lena’s partnership was being solidified and strengthened.

What did you most want to explore with Danny and Lena’s dynamic in Season 2?

I’m excited to see the friendship deepen and the partnership grow. I look forward to seeing how these two strong individuals continue to influence each other.

How is Lena and Mae’s relationship doing now that Chris and Kristina have been incorporated into their lives?

Lena and Mae are going to be able to heal and grow from here. They’re forging a foundation of honesty and trust now. The road will be challenging, but it’s the only true path forward.

In the beginning, it was only Lena and Mae braving the world together with Grandpa [Ernie Hudson] at their side. It’s wonderful that now, after life-changing truths were finally brought to light, these women can build something new and true together.

Danny might be taking a promotion at work that would make him Lena’s superior. How will they handle this change, especially when Lena’s been with the BPD longer?

It’ll be exciting to see how it affects the partnership. No matter what, they’ll have to trust each other and maintain the common ground they’ve found.

Will we see Lena and her dad on a case together this season?

I sure hope so! I have a feeling they would work really well together…!
