‘Magnum P.I.’: Where We Left Off & What to Expect in Season 5
If Magnum P.I. had truly been over and the Season 4 finale on CBS was the last episode, it did seem to wrap up some things neatly in a bow. You could imagine that Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Juliet Higgins’ (Perdita Weeks) kiss led wherever you want. But with NBC saving the drama, the Season 4 finale left off in an interesting place, setting up potentially two major changes going forward.
The other stemmed from the investigative work of the finale, which was very personal and very off-book for Detective Gordon Katsumoto (Tim Kang). In fact, he suspected by the end of it, that he might be looking at a career change. Read on as we take a look at where things left off and what’s to come in Season 5 in the two areas that are in for some changes.
Magnum & Higgins Post-Kiss
“There’s so much at stake,” Higgins had said when pondering a romantic relationship with Magnum. Things didn’t go as planned when she initially went to speak with him at the beginning of the finale only to find his ex, Lia (Chantal Thuy), there, but she insisted she wasn’t “bothered,” rather “surprised.” However, by the end of the episode, she admitted why she’d really stopped by.
“It wasn’t about work. I wanted to tell you something and then I saw Lia there and I just couldn’t,” Higgins explained. “But now I know nothing happened and I have to tell you because it’s just going to haunt me otherwise. I came to tell you that I have feelings for you. I tried to deny it and I just can’t anymore.”
She wasn’t the only one confessing in that last scene. “When you were in the wine cellar yesterday, I wanted to spend the day with you because I wanted to say the same thing,” he shared. “I have feelings for you. I think I have for a while, I just didn’t know it.”
Both had their “reservations” about risking losing their friendship and partnership, but despite agreeing “maybe we shouldn’t go there,” they kissed.

While Season 5 could have very well seen Magnum and Higgins take a step back, we already know they’ll be together, thanks to cast and executive producer comments and quite the steamy promos. Now, there’s the matter of what taking that step means not only for their personal relationship but their professional one as well. Based on what we’ve seen when other couples get together on a procedural drama after a drawn-out will they/won’t they, there are sure to be some growing pains, for them and those around them.
The two will have different approaches when it comes to their relationship. “Higgins is more cerebral and wants to think it through,” Hernandez told us, while according to Weeks, “Magnum is more heart-led. He’s the more natural romantic. Higgins is like a steel trap.”
Katsumoto’s Future With the HPD
Katsumoto was kidnapped along with his ex-wife, and in order to save her, he enlisted the help of Magnum and Higgins to break an inmate out of prison. Due to his actions, he had “a lot of things to answer for,” as Magnum noted near the end of the episode.
In fact, Lia found Katsumoto packing up his desk. He was “suspended indefinitely without pay, but they’ll probably take my badge,” he told her. But he wasn’t sorry. “I did what I had to,” he said. “Really, it’s alright. Just take care of yourself.”
That left his future with the department up in the air, and we’re wondering what that means for what comes next for him in Season 5 and the stories the writers want to tell. Will Katsumoto have his badge in Season 5? Or could we see him working to get it back by midseason?
For now, all we can do is speculate, especially with at least 20 episodes of Magnum P.I. on the way. Chances are there will be even more changes in store along the way.

Keeping fingers crossed and can’t wait to see how their relationship develops! They’ve been bickering like a married couple since S1 but being a couple will make things even more interesting.

First #SaveMagnumPI. Second if there is a season 5 there is so much that could be done with the long term story line. It all depends on the imagination and talent of the writers. If they stay together, a wedding, honeymoon, possibly an ocean cruise to somewhere else for their honeymoon solving mysteries and crimes along the way. The possibilities are endless.

I can't see Gordy leaving HPD. Yes, he did break some laws however no civilians were hurt and he brought down a crime syndicate through his actions. If I were writing this part of the story (and I'm not) Gordy will be rejected for a promotion we didn't know he was going for as punishment. A promotion that would have seen him desk-bound anyway. I like Gordy, he turns a convenient blind eye to Magnum's behaviour. Mainly because it gets results.

I would like to see a season 5. But if they take the romance between them away I will not watch another episode. They just kept teasing us for 4 seasons and it got very annoying. I definitely know it helped sell the show with them together ❤ 😉

I can’t figure out why CBS doesn’t just continue the series? It’s a advertising dream being a family show basically and they have all the rights to it and the sets, etc. I think they are stupid letting it go.

I think CBS made a big mistake canceling a great show like Magnum P.I. I enjoyed watching it on Fridays. I definitely will follow it if another network is smart enough to bring it back. Keep the relationship continue between Magnum and Higgins.

I think what they do with Magnum and Higgins depends on whether or not season 5 will be the final season. If it is the final, then I think they should move forward in their relationship. If they plan for a few more seasons then maybe they could come up with some elaborate way to keep them apart. Maybe they could bring back that girl from the episode with the judge. Remember, she called Magnum at the end. Maybe she returns and somehow derails Thomas and Juliet getting together.

Yeah I don’t know who’s bright idea it was to cancel Magnum. What idiots!! The fan base is huge. Just doesn’t make sense. It had to be those idiots sitting in a Boardroom that don’t have a clue. Loved Friday nights with Magnum and Higgins (and the gang)! I hope they do get picked up by another network.

I’d love to see this show return. I experienced it as evolving in depth and execution over the four seasons. I experience the characters having become more realistic and have improved in their acting over the years.
Personally I don’t care to compere the old Magnum P.I. to the new one. This is not the first time a series, whether it’s television or movies that has been reimagined, from James Bond to Batman, Superman, Sherlock Holmes, Mission Impossible to name a few. There has been some fun and interesting counterpoint with the support cast and their own stories woven reasonably well into the series. This is a family, feel good story that touches on some real issues. There’s are obviously some stretches. However, all good entertainment stretches some in the name of entertainment.
I am saddened that CBS like many networks start and build a likable series with a decent storyline and a legitimate audience not allow it to make a clean resolution. The end of the fourth season of Magnum P.I. was set up for more. Why not?

Don't want this love story to end. I think it be nice to see a love story plus adventure to continue. With those to together ❤️ its so perfect. They work so perfect together, 🥰 to me Hawaii is paradise, my dream of always wanting to see or live there. Their wedding and job that they work so perfect with. Is a way that should go on.. Remember It's Paradise!! Just wish I could be there and see the wedding. It's something everyone I know would love ❤️ to have...Higgins and Thomas have it and that perfect dream. Find that one love that last forever.!!

I'm so happy to know that magnum PI is coming back. Yes there are a lot of possibilities the storyline can go. But Honestly, which ever way the writers and creators take it, I'm sure it will be great! I'm just excited to know that nbc took them and that we'll see more of magnum PI because of it. We all can basically agree that Season 5 is important to resolve issues left blowing in the wind. Thomas and Higgins found that after four years that attraction was more than just friendly. What is so different they can feel each other without saying a word and when you find that it's hard to ignore you know what you need and want. The writers are excellent and they should allow us to see but keep it secret. A relationship more personal can be secret we play that game everyday, hey it fun and exciting. The rule never kiss and tell never share and tell. Higgins needs this complete feel as she should see that this is the kind of love she deserves and doesn't have to ask. Kasamoto he needs to be recalled to solve a case that has reared its ugly head and the stakes this time leads to top officials and top security who are targets where he drops the ball. But realizes TM is also a target he doesn't know why cannot stop it without Lea and Higgins going underground. Good senerio when the entire team gets set up then find rug been pulled and the killing begins. Question how to solve and who is ordering the death of so many and why?????. The writers can do it.

I pray the show will return. My husband & I have never missed an episode. We looked forward to Friday nights. I believe there are a lot of unhappy people out here once Magnum PI was canceled. I was in total shock to be honest. BAD MOVE! Hopefully NBC will bring it back. PLEASE!!!!

I love this show. I was so upset when I heard that it was canceled. You already canceled MacGyver. Please don’t cancel another one of my favorite shows. And especially the way it ended. I’ve been wanting Higgins and Magnum to get together forever. If the show does have a season 5 please don’t separate them make them stay together and get married and have their happily ever after.
