‘Magnum P.I.’ Saved! NBC Orders 20 New Episodes After CBS Cancellation
Magnum P.I. has been saved! NBC has ordered 20 new episodes of the Jay Hernandez-starring drama after CBS canceled the series last month.
According to Deadline, the 20 episodes will be divided into two seasons, bringing the reboot’s run to 96 episodes, with an option for more. The clock was running out on the action drama, with CBS Studios, which co-produces the series with Universal TV, not extending the options on the cast, which were set to expire at the end of Thursday, June 30.
However, with NBC agreeing to pick up the series, cast members are now signing on and finalizing deals to return for the upcoming seasons. In addition to Hernandez, the show also stars Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang, and Amy Hill.
Showrunner Eric Guggenheim is expected to return, alongside executive producers Justin Lin, John Davis, and John Fox. According to Deadline, the series will continue to be a co-production between Universal TV and CBS Studios.
Magnum P.I. debuted in 2018 as a reboot of the popular 1980s drama created by Donald P. Bellisario and Glen A. Larson that starred Tom Selleck. It revolves around Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), a former Navy SEAL who, after returning home from Afghanistan, moves to Hawaii, where he solves crimes as a private investigator.
CBS canceled the series back in May after a four-season run, despite being a Top 25 show in total viewers. As reported by Deadline, the show is believed to be the most-watched broadcast series to get the chop this past upfront season.

VERY HAPPY, but wish it was one 20-episode season rather than 2 10-episode seasons! Perhaps if the 10-episode season ranks so high it stuns NBC, they will air all 20 episodes the first NBC season. NOW FOLKS, we must back up all our promises to watch the show! I pray NBC broadcasts it Fridays at 9pm in its old timeslot where everyone is used to seeing it. THANK YOU NBC!!

From what Zach Knighton was saying on Instagram last night, the plan is to do 10 this upcoming season due to the late renewal/start and then S6 would possibly get more than 10 episodes if the ratings are high enough. Just be glad we're getting at least 20 episodes over the next couple years instead of it being dead.

Better than these stupid 6 episode seasons that seems to be the norm now. Of course as things go these days it will probably be 2 years before we see it start up again and we won't even remember what went on at the end of season 4 by then.

I just wanted to say that I'm tired of CBS cancelling all the really good shows.There is a show that has been on longer than any of the newer shows and that is 60 minutes. I think if any show has to be cancelled that's is the one honest.I love watching Magnum P.I. and I hope it runs for a very long time.I look forward to seeing that show every week.I was born in a military family so I can understand about this show.

I am so happy to hear that Magnum is coming back. It was a Friday night staple for my wife and I. When I read it has been canceled it made me wonder why all of the programs we really get into get cancelled after a short multi season run. This show was popular and deserves to continue. It is lighthearted but deals with crime. The show works with the cast seemingly enjoying their roles! Thank you NBC!!!

How does 2 10 episode seasons equal 96 episodes????? If they mean they have an option for a total of 96 episodes that is not what they said. Maybe it's their English that is the problem and not their math.

While this is great news, I'm wondering where exactly they're going to put it on NBC's schedule. Since it's only 10 episodes, it will most likely be a mid-season replacement. But it's so light-hearted compared to NBC's dark procedurals, I'm not sure where it's going to fit.
