Nashville, “I’m Not That Good at Goodbye” (Wednesday, Feb. 4, 10/9c, ABC)

On Nashville, which whipped itself into a sudsy frenzy back in December, life is like a country song: the wackier and more tormented, the better. As the show returns from its long holiday hiatus, the metaphorical jukebox is cranked up to full volume with all manner of juicy, over-the-top complications.

There’s Rayna’s (Connie Britton) lament to her jilted fiancé Luke (Will Chase): Won’t You Take the High Road, Hon, Even Though I Dumped You at the Altar With People Magazine Footing the Bill? (No surprise, he doesn’t.) Or this ditty, spoken verbatim by a non-fan of closeted gay rising star Will (Chris Carmack): Your Secret Is Killing Me! Or how about Gunnar (Sam Palladio) confronting his latest family crisis: Whoops Kid, I’m Your Uncle, Not Your Dad.And don’t forget Sadie’s Got a Gun, the latest twist in Sadie Stone’s (Laura Benanti) abusive-ex dilemma. And as Deacon (Charles Esten) wails My Liver Don’t Love Me No More while keeping his health situation from Rayna, impulsive newlyweds Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) and Avery (Jonathan Jackson) struggle to find a musical hook to their feng shui domestic conflict, because the groom has dared to bring an ugly but comfy chair into the pregnant bride’s posh digs. Well, maybe not every subplot is created equal.
