11 Sitcoms That Should Never Be Revived

23 and Me has very likely made this show’s concept of identical twins separated at birth and living in the same town obsolete. It was adorable to watch Tia (Tia Mowry) and Tamera (Tamera Mowry) grow up right in front of our eyes, and the show is still a treasured relic of the ’90s. However, it probably wouldn’t work as well today, as much as we might want to see what the twins are up to these days. – Amanda Bell

“Did I do that?” Well, yes you did, Steve Urkel (Jaleel White), if that lightning in a bottle. This cozy TGIF favorite was a must-watch for years and never wore out the gag of having the nerdy neighbor drop in and create havoc for the Winslows — particularly, the long-suffering pop cop Carl (Reginald VelJohnson). Things did get a little weird when the character got split into two, with Stefan Urkel finally getting the girl, Laura (Kellie Shanygne Williams), but fans rolled with it well enough. Still, the formula probably would be way too cute for today’s audiences and ruin the collective millennial memory of it, so it should never get the reboot treatment. – Amanda Bell

NBCUniversal slyly brought back this comedy in 2020 for a One-Time Special to advertise its other products — 30 Rock parodied media-conglomerate synergy, after all — and we hope that’s the end of it. The original 30 Rock is a hard act to follow, and given Alec Baldwin’s recent troubles, we hope he gets some time out of the spotlight.

By the time The Office went off air after nine seasons and several management shakeups on screen, it was coasting on the goodwill from its glory days. And Michael Scott (Steve Carell) would never stay employed in today’s social climate, right? (Consolation prize: the follow-up series The Paper, featuring Oscar Nunez’s long-suffering Oscar.)

This sitcom’s cast and creatives recently reunited, but Brad Garrett has shot down the idea of a revival for a good reason: The show wouldn’t work without the parents played by deceased actors Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts. And everybody loves Raymond’s family dynamics from the original run, right?

We wonder if all the flash-forwards that Michael Schur and Amy Poehlerscripted into Parks and Rec’s series finale were to ensure (en-Schur?) no one would try a revival of their show at some point down the line. That was also a near-perfect final episode, so treat yo’self to a repeat viewing to see the comedy magic we can’t imagine anyone repeating.

What would a Cheers revival even look like without so many of the bar’s regulars? George Wendt, Nicholas Colasanto, and Kirstie Alley are no longer with us, so let’s instead just raise a glass to the TV show that was — and to its spinoff Frasier (which recently mounted a brief revival itself).

By now, there’s just too much water under the bridge between Charlie Sheen and Chuck Lorre and between Sheen and Jon Cryer to contemplate another Two and a Half Men run. Plus, even if a piano hadn’t landed on Sheen’s Charlie Harper in the finale, his pickup-artist-like personality hasn’t aged well.

As much as Larry David and the other Seinfeld writers may want a re-do of the show’s divisive finale, we’d advise them to leave well enough alone. The hit sitcom was just such a product of its time — it’s hard to imagine Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer outside the ’90s.

Dan Levy tearfully admitted in a recent CBS Sunday Morning interview that he was thinking about bringing back the hit comedy he co-created with dad Eugene — and that those thoughts ended when Catherine O’Hara died. We totally understand. The Rose family just isn’t the same without Moira, bébé, and we toast to her memory with Herb Ertlinger.

Maybe we would have endorsed a Friends revival a few years ago, but ever since Matthew Perry’s 2023 death, we just can’t fathom the Central Perk gang reuniting without Chandler. The show’s ecosystem just doesn’t work with a party of five. But these friends will still be there for you… in reruns and on streaming.
