9 Things You Might’ve Missed in ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 2 Trailer

The Hargreeves siblings on The Umbrella Academy really can’t catch a break, can they?

As if it wasn’t enough that they tried (and failed) to stop the end of the world the first time, now their time-travel adventures have brought them to the ‘60s, where — surprise! — the world ends in nine days. Again. What’s a group of superpowered siblings to do? Well, if you’re Klaus (Robert Sheehan), you become a cult leader. But what’s everyone else to do?

The Season 2 trailer is packed with high-flying stunts, explosions, a new Gerard Way song, and a guy with a fish for a head (which is just the brand of weird we’ve come to expect from this show). In all the delightful craziness, here are nine blink-and-you’d-miss-them details.

The Umbrella Academy, Season 2 Premiere, Friday, July 31, Netflix

A few familiar characters

It seems like part of Season 2’s plot might revolve around getting Hargreeves (Colm Feore) to help the siblings out, or even to recruit super-powered kids. At the very least it seems he’ll create Pogo (Adam Godley), considering he’s walking with a chimpanzee here.

This guy…?

The Handler (Kate Walsh) kicked the bucket at the end of last season, so the Commission needed a new leader. It appears this — being, whatever it is, will take her place. Worth noting, though, is that this creature is the Handler from the comics and the head of the Commission, and a robot. If you were wondering, his name is Carmichael.

Diego soaring through the sky

Plenty of the Hargreeves siblings have brown hair, so you might’ve thought this was Klaus, Allison (Emmy Raver) or Vanya (Ellen Page). But if you take a close look at the sleeves this person is wearing, they’re not black: they’re purple-ish. Based on the shot of the whole team assembled at the start of the trailer, this is Diego (David Castañeda).

Old man Hazel

Hazel (Cameron Britton) is back! But he’s old, which is confusing because Klaus didn’t age when he used a briefcase to time-travel. Let’s hope we get an explanation for that… and that his sweetheart, Agnes, is still around.

This is also Diego

Diego gets quite a bit to do in this trailer, from running around in a mental hospital to watching this footage of JFK. You can tell it’s Diego from the outfit: the shoulder pads and color match what he was wearing in 2019.

Vanya in the mental hospital

Yes, this is clearly Vanya. But what’s not as clear on first watch is where she is. Judging by the presence of the guy dressed in white at the back of the shot — whose outfit matches those in the shots of Diego and his new friend in the mental hospital — we’re guessing she pays her brother a visit.

Is this Stranger Things?

Sure looks like Hawkins Lab! But no, it’s not — although there’s a decent chance the mental hospital Diego ends up in has something far shadier going on behind the scenes, assuming that’s where he is in this shot.

Diego finds Hargreeves

And in true Diego fashion, it appears he throws knives and asks questions later. Can’t really say we blame him: Hargreeves wasn’t exactly a loving, caring papa.

Five also might find Hargreeves

Or, if nothing else, someone’s musing about the siblings’ formative years. If you look closely at the blackboard in the left corner of the shot, someone’s written “Pogo” on it. Who knows? Given that Hargreeves has a chimpanzee in this trailer, maybe Pogo did that himself.
