The official trailer for Outlander‘s upcoming spinoff, Blood of My Blood, delivers a major shock that fans might not have seen coming as the standalone prequel thrusts Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) parents into the past with an epic time-traveling twist.

Previously teased as a series chronicling the parallel romances between Claire’s parents in World War I England and her husband Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) parents in 18th-century Scotland, Blood of My Blood‘s trailer proves it’s so much more than that.  In the opening moments of the trailer, we get a glimpse of Henry (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia Beauchamp (Hermione Corfield) traveling by car through the countryside when they’re seemingly thrown off course.

As a result of this accident, Julia finds herself inhabiting 1714, about 200 years before her time. “I don’t know how I got here. Perhaps I’ve lost my mind. There was a deafening sound, but then you were gone, or perhaps I was,” Julia’s narration points out. As Julia finds herself swept up in an unfamiliar world, she wonders aloud, “What day is it now?”

“Saturday in the year of 1714,” Davina Porter (Sara Vickers) tells her bluntly, putting her in a similar position that her daughter Claire would find herself in years later. The trailer reveals plenty of other exciting details, including feuding fathers, Henry’s search for his missing wife, Julia helping Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), connect, the Beltane festival, and much more.

While the trailer also teases some World War I action, it’s clear that while Brian and Ellen are at the start of their romance, Henry and Julia are at the stage where they’d do anything to reunite. How will it all play out, and what does this revelation mean for the series and the Outlander world? We’re breaking down some of the biggest reveals, easter eggs, and parallels from the trailer below.

Claire Makes an Appearance

It seems that baby Claire is making an appearance in the series as a snippet teases Henry and Julia smiling over a little baby. While it may not be Balfe onscreen, it’s a sweet surprise to know we’ll get a glimpse at the early start of Claire’s life.

The Car Accident!

As fans of Outlander know, Claire has previously said her parents died in a car accident when she was young, and it seems that we’ll be getting a look at said accident. But the catch seems to be that the pair survived, allowing for the introduction of this trailer’s time-traveling twist.

Julia's Disappearance

Julia’s journey to the past eerily mimics Claire’s stumble through the stones at Craigh Na Dun. Julia’s trip through time is further elaborated through what seems to be a missing stone on her ring. After all, gems are the primary element required to travel.

Henry at the Standing Stones

Henry’s desire to find his wife mirrors Claire’s first husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies), who looked far and wide to try and locate his bride after she mysteriously vanished for two years. But Henry’s journey seemingly differs as it appears he’ll be traveling through time, unlike Frank.

Julia Helps Ellen

Unaware of their future family ties, Ellen and Julia appear to cross paths, with the latter seemingly attempting to help Ellen connect with her love, Brian. This means that Julia would technically have an active role in helping bring Jamie and Claire together in the future. Talk about fate.

Blood of My Blood Is Sexy

While we had no doubts that an Outlander offshoot would embrace the steamier side of romance, viewers are getting a glimpse at the fiery passion between Ellen and Brian with this snippet. As viewers know from tuning into Outlander, Ellen was pregnant before she ever wed Brian.

Murtagh Is Jealous

Fans may recall the revelation in Outlander Season 1 that Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) was in love with Ellen, and it seems the younger version of him (played by Rory Alexander) is experiencing some jealousy when he catches sight of her with Brian.
