In a flashback, a young Sofia (Estelle Getty) prepares for a life change as her elderly mother (hilariously played by onscreen daughter Bea Arthur) moves in. Turns out, there could be a more cantankerous roommate than Sofia! Other vignettes show tender memories from Dorothy (Arthur) and pals Rose (Betty White) and Blanche (Rue McClanahan) from holidays past.
Everybody Hates Chris
“Everybody Hates Mother’s Day” (Season 3, Episode 21)
As cocreator and narrator Chris Rock explains, “In my house, the most important holiday of the year was Mother’s Day. You’d think it’d be Christmas. And it might have been, if Jesus cleaned our house and cooked our meals.” Young Chris (Tyler James Williams) wants to get his mom (Tichina Arnold) some pricey perfume, but since he’s short on cash, he opts for a cheap knockoff. Unfortunately, it comes with an unwelcome bonus: a rash for mom.
Raising Hope
“Mother’s Day” (Season 3, Episode 22)
Proving you’re never too old to make things right, Maw Maw (Cloris Leachman) is reunited with her long-lost 104-year-old mother (also played by Leachman) and gets a chance to make amends for their decades-old feud. Let’s just say that this reconciliation comes right in the nick of time.

“Smother’s Day” (Season 3, Episode 22)
Golden child Adam (Sean Giambrone) remembers Mother’s Day, so he’s free to go about his life (and pursue his dream of going to space camp). But siblings Barry (Troy Gentile) and Erica (Hayley Orrantia) aren’t so lucky when they forget the big day and are forced to endure the kind of massive guilt trip only Beverly Goldberg (Wendi McLendon-Covey) can deliver. And she makes it clear she doesn’t need any more “free hug coupons”: “I’ve been saving them for a rainy day. And guess what? Storm’s a-comin’!”
30 Rock
“The Moms” (Season 4, Episode 20)
Just about everyone on this sharp comedy gets a maternal visit, which means viewers are in for a treat: The brilliant Broadway legend Elaine Stritch is back as Jack’s (Alec Baldwin) mom! Meanwhile, sketch show writer Liz (Tina Fey) learns her mother (guest star Anita Gillette, Moonstruck) could have married famed astronaut Buzz Aldrin (playing himself in a wacky cameo).
Not to sound cynical here, but flowers die, jewelry is expensive and too much chocolate is bad for your mom’s health.
So consider giving her the Mother’s Day gift she really wants this year: time spent with you watching great mama-centric television!
