‘The Mindy Project’s Mindy Kaling and Matt Warburton on the Mindy-Danny Cliffhanger
After relationship highs and lows, The Mindy Project‘s Mindy (Mindy Kaling) ended the season semi-rekindling her relationship with her former fiance, Danny (Chris Messina)—even though he was now engaged to someone else and she had started dating Jody (Garret Dillahunt).
“We’ve been really thrilled that people had such strong reaction to where we left things at the end of the season,” executive producer Matt Warburton said during the show’s Television Critics Association panel. “We owe it to our audience to answer the question pretty quickly when we come back. We won’t leave you hanging when we come back in October.”
“The name of our premiere is ‘Decision 2016,'” Kaling added. “Because in Mindy’s mind, that’s the largest looming question this year going on this year.”

Complicating matters is the fact that off-screen, Messina is no longer a series regular on the Hulu comedy. “We can’t say too much, because Decision 2016 will communicate to the audience what is going to happen,” Warburton teased. “But we love [Messina], he loves working on the show. No matter what happens, he’s Leo’s dad. He will always have a place on the show…every time we see him, we try and use him in the best possible way.”
“I love acting with him; he’s such a great guy,” Kaling added. “He’s still in the world of the show, so fans don’t have to worry.”
