NYCC 2017: ‘Future Man’ Turns Sexism on Its Head
One day after Hulu dropped the first trailer for Future Man, the streaming service shared the first episode for an audience exclusively at New York Comic-Con.
The first episode of the Seth Rogan-produced comedy finds Josh Futterman (Josh Hutcherson) trying to save the world with help from two video game characters, Tiger (Eliza Coupe) and Wolf (Derek Wilson), who have arrived from the future. The trio bounce from decade to decade attempting to stop the event they believe will cause the end of the world. And, of course, while trying to stop the destruction of mankind, they leave a wake of bodies and bullet holes in their path.
But the character who takes on the Alpha role in Future Man and does the most ass-kicking isn’t your stereotypical dude, it’s Eliza Coupe’s Tiger. She can land one hell of a roundhouse kick, ride off on a Harley Davidson, and keep her purple ponytail in place without breaking a sweat.
Creators Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir and showrunner Ben Karlin decided to make Tiger a “kinda bad ass leader” and use Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor in The Terminator series) as their “model.”
Coupe appears just as feisty IRL, too. When an audience member asked her play the classic game “F**k, Marry, Kill” with her cast mates on stage she answered like a pro—”I’m allowed to f**k whoever I want. I’m not going to kill any of them. I just, I’ve been married twice, I can’t do it again.”
