What To Know

  • Marg Helgenberger joins Boston Blue Season 2 as Gwen Silver, Sarah Silver’s estranged mother.
  • The Silver family, a blended household with deep law enforcement ties, will face new emotional challenges as Gwen’s return stirs up unresolved issues.
  • The Season 2 premiere features a copycat Boston Strangler case and features the return of Blue Bloods‘ Len Cariou.

The cast of Boston Blue Season 2 is expanding with a new addition to the Silver family that will reveal backstory for Maggie Lawson‘s Sarah Silver. CSI: Vegas star Marg Helgenberger joins the cast as Sarah’s estranged mother, Gwen Silver. The Blue Bloods spinoff returns on October 9 on CBS.

Helgenberger will play Gwen Silver, a complex yet charming woman whose temperament is not unlike the climate of her Cape Cod home — unpredictable. Gwen returns to Boston with a very personal and emotional agenda just when Sarah least expects it. Though Gwen loves her daughter more than anything, her arrival adds a complicated layer to the Silver family dynamic.

The Silver family in Boston Blue is a blended family led by matriarch Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben). Her late husband, Ben Silver. Mae, Boston’s District Attorney, converted to Judaism when she was with Ben, a powerful Boston judge. Ben was killed prior to the events of Season 1, and his murder was a sensitive subject when his killer was released from prison, and the real culprit behind the hit was revealed.

Sarah is close with her stepmother, and Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) was close with her stepfather. Little brother Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner) is the son of Ben and Mae. He got into the law enforcement business like the rest of his family in the first season.

Law enforcement runs in the extended family as well. Lena learned the identity of and met her biological father, Crispus “Chris” Williams (Erik King), at the end of Season 1. He’s a detective, just like Lena. He also has a daughter, Kristina (Alisha Wainwright), whom Lena never knew about. These family members will return in Boston Blue Season 2. And with the addition of Sarah’s mother, Gwen, the family drama is deepening.

In the Boston Blue Season 2 premiere, a series of murders begins mirroring the infamous Boston Strangler killings. Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Lena race to stop a copycat killer before he strikes again. As panic grips the city, Jonah and Sean (Mika Amonsen), fresh off their rookie year, as well as Henry Reagan (Len Cariou), jump in to help Danny and Lena track down and arrest the killer. Also, Danny faces a career-defining promotion while Lena uncovers a lead that could link the attack on Detective Rodgers (Ryan Broussard) to a powerful figure.

Season 2 will also feature a guest-star appearance from Blue Bloods‘ Will Estes, reprising his role as Jamie Reagan.
