10 Best Sitcom Revivals & Reboots, Ranked — Where Will ‘Scrubs’ Land?

Aside from Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith — now grandparents and not parents of a main character — this show largely ignored That ’70s Show’s lead cast to focus on a new generation of characters. Even with those affable teens, That ’90s Show wasn’t a huge success, but it did the original proud… and we look forward to That ’10s Show in another 20 years.

Saved by the Bell’s reboot took the comedy from multi-camera to single-camera, and that wasn’t the only update. The new version also playfully mocked its predecessor, with the original cast members gamely along for the ride. The punchlines were hit-or-miss, but to its credit, this was a reboot that didn’t just retread the original’s path.

Though reports of off-screen drama spoiled the fun, and the reboot didn’t have the same impact as the original, we were lucky to rejoin the fab foursome of the 2000s’ Will & Grace one more time in the late 2010s. Even with all their shade-throwing, Will (Eric McCormack), Grace (Debra Messing), Jack (Sean Hayes), and Karen (Megan Mullally) will always be friends, and we’ll always be there to watch.

Here, fans got a reboot that lasted even longer than the original. Raven’s Home had Raven-Symoné once again playing the That’s So Raven’s psychic Raven Baxter — and, surprise, surprise, there’s another clairvoyant in the house — sliding back into her old role so easily that fans remembered why she charmed them in the first place. That’s so Raven!

Its many fan-voted award nominations are proof that Girl Meets World was to Gen Zers what Boy Meets World was to millennials. As viewers got to know Cory and Topanga’s daughter and watched her grow up, they also caught up with many familiar faces — and, luckily, the reboot predated Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel’s apparent falling-out!

As iCarly’s revival picked up, the teens who had led the original were now full-on adults, with all the complications and frustrations of grown-up life. But the revival was wise enough to keep the humor just as zany and kid-friendly as the original, meaning it was nostalgic for old fans and entertaining for new ones.

The misbehavior of its lead star turned the Roseanne revival into the reboot The Conners, and thanks to the talents of John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf and the rest of the cast, the blue-collar comedy not only survived but thrived. With seven seasons of laughs, The Conners is the rare reboot that nearly lives up to its predecessor.

The Comeback made a comeback of its own, returning to the screen nearly a decade after its cancellation. Once again, Lisa Kudrow played Valerie Cherish, a former sitcom star looking for another claim to fame. But in Season 2, the humor got even more meta, with Valerie starring in a fictionalized TV show about her comeback vehicle.

Party Down? You don’t have to ask us twice, not when the old gang of cater-waiters reassembles and reunites the likes of Adam Scott, Jane Lynch, and Ken Marino after they’d each gotten their due recognition on other projects. And better yet, the comedy came back as laugh-out-loud funny as ever.

We’re still mourning the too-soon demise of this reboot, which kept Norman Lear’s original concept— a single mom raising her kids — and even kept Lear as an executive producer but transposed the story onto a Cuban-American family. It’s a sitcom with humor in spades but a human, heartstring-pulling drama in abundance.
