[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for the Chicago P.D. Season 8 finale, “The Other Side.”]

We went into the Chicago P.D. finale not knowing if Officer Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) would live or die after she was attacked, and we left it…wondering the same thing. But that’s not all that went down in the shocking hour.

Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) threw everything that had been said about police reform and not doing things the Voight way out the window in his attempt to locate his missing officer, and his face-off with the perpetrator ends with Detective Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) trying to talk her boss into bringing him in and doing what’s right. But when the perp reaches for Voight’s gun, she must take the shot.

Meanwhile, Detective Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Officer Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) found Burgess, bleeding after getting shot, and rushed her to the hospital. Officer Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), as much as he wanted to be involved in the search, looked after Burgess’ daughter Makayla and waited for news.

Oh, and Upton, upon arriving home after what went down with Voight and the perp, proposed to her boyfriend and partner Halstead.

Where does Chicago P.D. go from there? Scroll down for our burning questions for Season 9.

Will Burgess survive?

The good news is she was still alive when her teammates found her. The bad news is she had been bleeding out for quite a while and was still in surgery at the end of the finale.

Did Voight set Upton up to shoot Roy?

After seemingly giving in to Upton’s pleas to just bring Roy in (and not kill him), Voight uncuffed Roy, who grabbed his gun. As Roy and Voight struggled for control of the gun, Upton had to shoot the perp. But did Voight orchestrate that entire thing? After all, he had to know he was tempting fate by putting his gun anywhere within Roy’s reach.

Is there going to be an Upstead wedding?

To say Upton was not in the right frame of mind to be making any decisions about her future after what happened with Roy would be an understatement. But Halstead doesn’t know that since she said she and Voight didn’t find anything. “I don’t want to be without you,” she told him. “Maybe we should get married. I’m serious. Let’s get married.” Will Halstead say yes? Will he figure out she’s hiding something big from him?

Has the Roy problem really been buried?

Voight sent Upton home while he took care of Roy’s body, by burying and burning it. But it would be too easy if that’s the end of that. What will the fallout of the shooting and cover-up be? Will Voight protect Upton? Who will find out what happened?

Patrick John Flueger as Adam Ruzek in Chicago PD - Season 8 Finale

What does the future hold for Burgess and Ruzek?

If Burgess survives, could there be a Burzek reunion in Season 9? We saw how worried he was about her — he and Atwater even exchanged blows over it — and he’s fitting into his role as Makayla’s guardian quite nicely. Is it possible that a tiny bit of happiness could come out of these possibly tragic events, Burgess lives, and she and Ruzek get back together?

What will Intelligence look like in Season 9?

If the truth comes out about Roy, who knows how long Voight and Upton could still have their badges. Burgess’ fate is up in the air; she could very well die. Even if she lives, she has her daughter to consider. Upton and Halstead, if they get married, probably can’t continue to work together (though this is TV, so who knows what will happen?).
