ABC Boss on ‘Castle’s Demise
ABC surprised Castle viewers when word leaked that series stars Stana Katic (Beckett) and Tamala Jones (Lanie) would not return to the drama if it returned for a ninth season. Ultimately, it ended up being a moot point: Castle was canceled.

Of the controversial casting moves being made when the show wasn’t guaranteed a renewal, “that’s a case where you have things running on two parallel tracks,” ABC Entertainment Group president Channing Dungey said during her executive session at the Television Critics Association press tour. “We were always very upfront with the studio and producers about the possibility that we might not be bringing back the show for Season 9.”

As the decision was looming, “the studio has to do what they need to do to prepare for the possibility of Season 9,” Dungey said. “So, they did what they felt what they needed to do in order to be ready if they got the nod. Ultimately for us at the network, we didn’t feel it was the right thing to do, to order another season.”

No Stana No Castle. If they were not including Stana in S9 - cancel it. They fired the heart of the show. Network didn't know their audience enough and didn't look at ratings.

Canceling Castle was the very best call since key component Kate Beckett, played so beautifully by Stana Katic, would no longer be a part of the show.

Nothing she said is any different that what she said before. Something else came up whether it was the fan outcry or another business consideration that we will never be privy to. As for making the right decision? Cancelling it without Katic, yes, firing Katic and Jones, a big fat NO.

The show was called "Castle". Not Beckett or Lanier. So replace them and move on. The show was great and was pissed when I heard it was cancelled.

The thing is that instand of making it around Rick Castle like they did in season 1 they moved it to Rick & Kate making them Castle. You couldn't do one without the other. Now I could see younger Castle doing it making it her own but once they let go Stana, all of us fan went into an outrage. We all knew that season 7 should of been their last but we were happy for season 8 but the show writers screwed it up so much that a lot of us started to stop watching it & they literually make us wish that Season 7 was the last season. I love Castle but without Kate, the show would never of lasted a few episodes into season 9. ABC did the right thing though I wished they would of renewed it like how FOX did for Bones. Give the writers time to wrap up untold story lines & finish out the current arc of the story.

Rubbish!whether you like it or not, they tried several times to do episodes focusing on Fillion and it was a disaster. They could have made it work if the writers stayed true to the story which was Castle & Beckett. It was not and never could be about Rick Castle alone. If they had tried to do a season9 without the Beckett character it would have been a disaster!

The show was never just around Rick Castle. Like, not ever. From the very first episode it was about Rick Castle and Kate Beckett. Go back and watch "Flowers for Your Grave." They spent as much time setting up Beckett's character as they did Castle's.
The show was about these two people who were clearly destined for each other. He's intrigued, she's appalled - but not really. He's needs a purpose in his life, she needs to loosen up and learn to enjoy life. Just like "Bones" was about the relationship between "Bones" Brennan and Booth, Castle was about Castle and Beckett.

Lmao - what the hell show are you watching? The ENTIRE long running methodology was based on HER backstory and her mother's death, as he followed HER around for the cases. As he's not the actual freaking cop. No cop - no show. (The PI crap was a mess.)
So, yeah...no. It was not going to work without his partner and WIFE, lmao.

"Castle" without Beckett would be like "Remington Steele" without Laura Holt. Sure, the namesake character is still there, but the whole reason for the show is lost. A wealthy flippant PI is a cliché, now.

I agree - no Beckett, no Castle. Couldn't they at least do a spin-off with some of the regulars. It would be funny with Castle, Ryan and Espo... Too bad the series finale sucked. They could've come up with something better, and more realistic, couldn't they?

Show couldn't be one with out the other, it's doesn't matter what the show is called, it's what it's about and it's about caskett not just castle it will never be just about castle, I'm gutted that castle is finished but it's for the best, I'm living off repeats and fanfition now, I would never have worked without Kate and Lanie, so I'm just glad they had a propa ending. And I can live off that, they could never be replaced, and caskett will live on, just not on TV😞

ABC screwed the pooch when it came to the way they handled it. When they fired 1/2 the female leads it was clear message of the end coming soon.
