‘Handmaid’s Tale,’ ‘Will & Grace,’ ‘This Is Us’ Nominated for GLAAD Media Awards
It’s awards season, and everyone is trying to predict what Golden Globes and Producer’s Guild Awards wins mean for this year’s Oscar hopefuls. But don’t count out the folks at GLAAD—they’ve just announced the nominees for the LGBTQ media advocacy org’s 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards.
These may not have a ton of influence in who will take home a little gold statue in March, but the awards say something much more important about pop culture: recognizing fair, accurate and inclusive representation of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives across media platforms and outlets.
And obviously, that includes TV. When the awards are given out in L.A. and New York this spring, major Oscar-bait films like Call Me By Your Name and Ladybird will be honored alongside queer inclusive shows like Sense8, Modern Family and Transparent.
While all four broadcast networks are represented, streaming site Netflix tops everyone with seven nominations, including nods for miniseries Godless, Master of None and its reboot of One Day at a Time.
It’s also the first year that GLAAD will recognize LGBTQ inclusion in Kids and Family Programming. Disney Channel’s Andi Mack, Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe and Nickelodeon’s The Loud House are all nominated alongside standout episodes of Amazon’s Danger & Eggs and Disney’s Doc McStuffins.
