Despite Jane Lynch’s best efforts to promote #LynchJaneJane as an alternative to the Whip and Nae Nae, the most memorable moments from last night’s People’s Choice Awards came in unscripted form. As is often the case with awards shows, the most buzzworthy events were emotional acceptance speeches and an odd mishap or two. These are the moments that broke away from the usual “I want to thank the fans” speeches to really make an impression.

Ellen DeGeneres’s Humanitarian Award Speech

Ellen DeGeneres was the big winner at the PCAs. Not only did she win the awards for Favorite Daytime TV Host and Favorite Humanitarian, she also broke her own record for most total PCA awards (she now has 17). After a gushing introduction from Melissa McCarthy and a montage of some of her charity work, DeGeneres took the stage to deliver a witty speech that struck just the right balance of self-deprecation through comically exaggerated self-aggrandizement. But beyond the humor, the overall sentiment of her acceptance was one of the most resounding takeaways from the evening. “I want everyone to know that we really, really love one another. Deep down, we all love one another.”

Vin Diesel’s Emotional Furious 7 Tribute

When Vin Diesel was handed two awards on the PCA stage, one for Favorite Action Movie and one for Favorite Movie, he couldn’t help but get choked up. Overwhelmed by support for the Furious series, Diesel also said the second award made him think of franchise co-star Paul Walker, who passed away in 2013. Diesel ended his speech with a tribute to Walker, singing the lyrics to “See You Again” from the Furious 7 soundtrack over the wrap-up music playing on stage.

The Talk’s Unwanted Interruption

For whatever reason, a guy decided the perfect time to run onto stage and promote a rapper named Kevin Gates was during the acceptance speech for Favorite Daytime TV Hosting Team. The winners, The Talk hosts, were less than pleased when the intruder took the mic from Sara Gilbert, with Sheryl Underwood and Sharon Osbourne quickly shooing him off stage and calling for security. For future reference, if you’re thinking about pulling a Kanye at an awards show, you probably shouldn’t…unless you actually are Kanye. Scratch that. You probably just shouldn’t.
