Southern Rites (Monday, May 18, 9/8c, HBO)

In 2009, photographer Gillian Laub documented the integration of various high school proms in Montgomery County, Georgia. In 2011, she went back to chronicle the county’s sheriff’s election, just as an older white man shot and killed a young black man in his home. Turns out the shooter’s daughter had invited the young man over. First-time director Laub weaves together stories of the trial and the campaign to elect Montgomery County’s first black sheriff. John Legend, who also executive produced, wrote a new song (“We Still Believe”) for the documentary.
