John Stamos Thought ‘Full House’ Costar Lori Loughlin Wasn’t Tough Enough to Play Aunt Becky
What To Know
- John Stamos initially doubted Lori Loughlin was tough enough to play Aunt Becky on Full House but quickly realized she was perfect for the role after their first scene together.
- Loughlin shared a humorous story about presenting an Emmy that Stamos was nominated for, teasing him about not announcing his name as the winner.
- Dave Coulier, another Full House costar, immediately felt Loughlin was a natural fit for the cast and predicted she would be part of the show for a long time.
To quote Stephanie Tanner, “How rude!” John Stamos admitted at a recent fan convention that he initially thought Full House costar Lori Loughlin wasn’t tough enough to play Rebecca “Aunt Becky” Donaldson, the love interest and eventual wife of his Jesse Katsopolis, on the 1990s sitcom.
Stamos confessed those early misgivings at 90s Con at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, Connecticut, on October 18, per People. He said he told Full House creator Jeff Franklin that he thought Loughlin was cute and adorable but possibly not “tough enough to put Jesse in his place.”
The actor was soon disabused of that notion. “Scene one, she came, and she put me in my place,” he said of Loughlin. He also called his co-star “this adorable, sweet girl” who could also ratchet up the onscreen drama when needed.
And Loughlin, who said she was originally booked for just six episodes of the show, shared with the convention crowd that she and Stamos had a run-in earlier in their careers, during their daytime-drama days.
As Loughlin revealed, she presented the 1983 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role in a Daytime Drama Series, an award for which Stamos, then a General Hospital star, was nominated.
“He didn’t win. Darnell Williams won from All My Children. And so to this day he [says], ‘You couldn’t have said, ‘John Stamos’?’” she joked.
Loughlin also recalled costar Dave Coulier, the actor behind Full House’s Joey Gladstone, thinking she was part of the family almost immediately.
“I remember the first week I was there, I was on set with all you guys and laughing about something,” Loughlin said. “And the producers, the writers were there, and Dave said — because the show was fairly new — Dave said, ‘I don’t know … how long the show’s gonna last, but I’m pretty sure Lori will be with us forever.’”
