Kimmel Gives Trump New Nickname After President Falls Asleep Again in Meeting

Jimmy Kimmel noted the irony of Donald Trump invoking the name “Sleepy Joe Biden” during an Oval Office press event in which the president himself appeared to fall asleep. And he couldn’t resist using a new nickname for the nap-loving president.

The late-night host, who is presenting Jimmy Kimmel Live! from the Brooklyn Academy of Music this week, played a clip from the press meeting during Tuesday’s (September 29) monologue. “Trump has been in office now for almost two years, and he’s still trying to blame everything he doesn’t like on Joe Biden,” Kimmel said.

He then threw to a clip of Trump telling the press, “This announcement is only possible because of the pro-American policies of the Trump administration, under Sleepy Joe Biden… have you heard of him?”

“No, I haven’t heard of him; you’ve never mentioned him before,” Kimmel quipped.

The comedian continued, “Then, only minutes after invoking the name ‘Sleepy Joe Biden,’ nappy Don Trump drifted off to dreamland on live TV.”

He then played a montage of clips of Trump seemingly nodding off in his Oval Office chair as members of his administration spoke behind him. And Kimmel couldn’t stop laughing about “Nappy Don Trump.”

“Even Mitch McConnell was like, ‘Bro, wake up!’” Kimmel joked, referencing the Kentucky Senator who returned to Congress earlier this month after a 90-plus day absence from public due to health problems.

Trump previously told the Wall Street Journal that he isn’t sleeping in such clips but rather just resting his eyes or blinking. “I’ll just close [my eyes]. It’s very relaxing to me,” he explained. “Sometimes they’ll take a picture of me blinking, blinking, and they’ll catch me with the blink.”

Not everyone bought Trump’s excuses, though, including CNN medical analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner, who wrote on X, “The president seems to be struggling with excessive daytime somnolence. Repeatedly falling asleep with a dozen people surrounding your desk is not normal. It needs to be evaluated.”

Earlier this month, Kimmel coined a new nickname for Trump in light of his napping habit, calling him “Teddy Doze-evelt.” This came after the president was allegedly caught dozing off during a September 11 memorial ceremony.

“He was sleeping so much on camera the White House had to put out a statement and said he wasn’t asleep; they said he was just ‘solemnly listening,'” Kimmel said. “Which is the same kind of ‘solemnly listening’ Melania does when he tries to crawl in bed with her.”
