Mitch McConnell Appears to Freeze Up in Awkward Video of Senate Meeting

Sen. Mitch McConnell appeared to be instructed how to vote during a Senate committee meeting on Wednesday (September 16) after freezing up when his name was read.

Multiple accounts shared the clip on social media, including HQNewsNow, which wrote, “Republicans have to instruct Mitch McConnell to vote “yes” on a bill after he nearly votes “no” with Democrats.”

In the clip from Wednesday’s Senate Agriculture Committee meeting on the Farm Bill, the 84-year-old senator sits in silence. His name is then called to give his vote, though he doesn’t answer immediately and seems to freeze. A female aide seated behind McConnell and Chairman John Boozman, seated next to him, both appear to tell him to vote yes.

McConnell eventually votes “aye.”

The committee approved the bill on a 12-11 vote along party lines.

McConnell had been the subject of speculation since he was hospitalized on June 14 after suffering a fall and went months without a public appearance. In July, the senator’s team sent an email update on his health, along with a photo of McConnell sitting upright in a hospital bed with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, by his side.

“Last month, I took a fall which landed me in the hospital,” McConnell explained at the time. He noted that he suffered no broken bones and did not suffer a stroke, heart attack, concussion, or hemorrhage. However, he was “briefly unconscious,” taken to a hospital, and developed a “mild case of pneumonia” during his stay.

McConnell returned to the Senate on Monday (September 14) after not being seen in public for 92 days. He appeared in a wheelchair, with many political commentators noting that he looked frail and not fully cognizant.

The latest clip from the Senate Agriculture Committee meeting drew further criticism. “This behavior is considered Fraud//Elder abuse if you try to do it at your bank btw,” wrote one X user.

“If he ain’t competent to make his own decisions then WHY IS HE THERE VOTING IN THE FIRST PLACE?” said another.

“How is it that there are no laws regarding cognitive impairment that cover the House & Senate?” another added.

Another wrote, “How is it legal to tell another senator how to vote? He had no clue what he was doing.”

“Elder abuse. You’d get fired at a financial institution if you engage with a client old and aloof,” said one commenter.

“Aren’t there laws supposed to be in place to remove someone from an elected position if deemed not mentally capable of reasonable thinking? The whole puppets on a string thing has come to a whole new level,” another added.

“If he voted no, you know next day they’d say he’s no longer fit for purpose,” said another.
