What To Know

  • Savannah Guthrie will be taking several weeks off from Today to film her latest TV project.
  • It has not been revealed when Guthrie will return to the NBC morning show or who will host in her absence.
  • It was previously announced that Guthrie will host NBC’s upcoming Wordle game show.

Today viewers won’t be starting their days with Savannah Guthrie for the next few weeks.

“A few months back, we announced that Wordle the game show is coming to NBC. Savannah, of course, is going to host. Our buddy Jimmy Fallon [is] producing,” Carson Daly said during the show’s “PopStart” segment. Addressing Guthrie, he added, “And you’ve got some news about Wordle.”

Guthrie went on to reveal, “We’re about to do it. Guys, I’m headed over to shoot Wordle. Over the next few weeks, we’re gonna shoot the whole season, and we’re super excited. Cannot wait for everyone to see it. It’ll probably air, I think, in the new year.”

Sheinelle Jones shared her excitement for Guthrie, stating, “I just remember when Wordle hit the Today show group, and we became obsessed. We were texting each other. And so, now to bring it full circle and have you doing this is pretty awesome.”

Craig Melvin called Guthrie the “perfect host” for the show, while Jenna Bush Hager said she and her fellow hosts will “miss” Guthrie during her hiatus.

Further details about Guthrie’s upcoming absence were not revealed, including when her break will begin, when she will return to Studio 1A, and who will fill in for her at the anchor desk. A post on Today‘s official Instagram page confirmed that Guthrie “will be off for a few weeks as she heads over to shoot NBC’s Wordle game show.”

Back in October 2025, news broke that Guthrie was being tapped to host the NBC game show, which is produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio and Fallon’s Electric Hot Dog company.

Fallon popped by the May 11 episode of Today to officially announce the show and Guthrie’s hosting role. “We were looking, and we were like, ‘Who’s the perfect host for this? We need to have someone that looks like they play Wordle, someone that knows how to run a show and host it,'” he gushed. “And we did the pilot, and you are amazing, by the way.”

Savannah revealed that the series was supposed to film in March, but was pushed back in the wake of her mother Nancy Guthrie‘s disappearance. Nancy has been missing from her Arizona home since February, and authorities have yet to name any suspects in the ongoing investigation.

“I just want to say a quick thank you to NBC and to Jimmy and his production company and The New York Times and Studio Universal because when everything happened with me and my family, they just stopped everything and said, ‘We’ll wait for you,'” she shared. “And Hollywood is a really tough business, as you know, and I didn’t expect that. And I just want to say thank you. It means so much to me.”

Savannah previously took a few days off from Today last month to work on the game show. “Sheinelle is in for Savannah, who, by the way, is starting production meetings on the Wordle game show, coming to NBC later this year,” Melvin announced on the show’s June 17 episode.
