Which ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Is Best? (POLL)

Yellowstone spinoffs Dutton Ranch, Marshals, 1923, and 1883
Paramount; CBS

Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone TV universe has now produced 11 seasons of television since the flagship series debuted in June 2018. Eight years after viewers met Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, there are four Yellowstone spinoffs that continue the story of the Dutton family history, two of which came out in 2026. Now that Dutton Ranch Season 1 is over, we want to know which Yellowstone spinoff is your favorite. Cast your vote in the poll below. Warning: Dutton Ranch finale spoilers ahead.

Dutton Ranch stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser. This spinoff is the most similar in style and tone to Yellowstone out of all four of the spinoffs. It follows Beth and Rip as they move from Montana to Texas after a fire destroys their new home. They bought a legacy ranch in Rio Paloma, one that the Texas equivalent of John Dutton, Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), had her eyes on to add to her famous 10-Petal Ranch. Beth and Rip have a rivalry with Beulah at first, and then they’re forced to go to her for work when their herd of cattle was destroyed by an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

The cattle disaster was just the tip of the iceberg of the conflict between these two ranching families. Now, with their son, Carter (Finn Little), kidnapped by the cartel run by Joaquin’s (Juan Pablo Raba) father, Mariano (Raoul Trujillo), Beth and Rip will have to work with Beulah to get him back. Ed Harris‘ Everett McKinney is “going to become a very important, integral part of Season 2,” Hauser told TV Insider. Reilly added, “Season 2 is going to feel very much more Ed’s show.”

Marshals stars Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton. It’s the only Yellowstone spinoff made specifically for CBS. In it, Kayce’s wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), has died of cancer, and he’s looking for a new start for himself and his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill). Kayce joins the Montana U.S. Marshals to get his new beginning, where his fellow Navy SEAL veteran Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) is his team leader. The rest of the team is comprised of Belle (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea (Ash Santos), and Miles (Tatanka Means). They work to keep Montana safe while Kayce collides with present-day conflicts rooted in his family’s history.

Both Dutton Ranch and Marshals have been renewed for Season 2, and both of their first seasons end with the kidnapping of the main characters’ sons. Tate was said to be taken to Texas by Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey) in the Marshals finale. As he flew away with Kayce’s son, the episode revealed that he gave the order to have Cal and Belle attacked. Marshals Season 2 will pick up where the finale left off and attempt to save Tate. Reilly, Grimes, and Hauser have all expressed interest in staging a crossover between their two shows.

1883 was the first Yellowstone spinoff. It tells the story of how the Dutton family ended up living in Montana during the era of Westward Expansion in America. It stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton, who are guided across the country by Shea (Sam Elliott) and Thomas (LaMonica Garrett). Accompanying James and Margaret are their teen daughter Elsa (Isabel May) and young son John (Audie Rick). When adventurous Elsa’s life ended in tragedy, her family settled where she died so they would never leave her behind. That’s how the Dutton family burial site seen in Yellowstone got started.

1923 tells the story of how John Dutton II (Dabney Coleman in Yellowstone), the father of Costner’s character, was born. It stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton. Jacob is the brother of James and Claire Dutton (Dawn Olivieri in 1883). After both of his siblings and Margaret died, Jacob and Cara took over running the Yellowstone ranch and raised James and Margaret’s surviving children, John and Spencer, as their own. John (James Badge Dale) died in 1923 Season 1, and Spencer’s love story with British aristocrat Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) was the main love story of both seasons. Spencer and Alex fought to reunite in Season 2, the final season, and they did, but briefly. Alex died from complications from frostbite after giving birth to their son, John II, named after Spencer’s late brother.

Two more Yellowstone spinoffs — the 1944 prequel and 6666, reportedly set in the present day — were previously in development, but there have been no updates since the shows were announced several years ago. They could still be in the works while Sheridan’s deal with Paramount is still active (it ends in 2028).

Enough with the spinoffs already. Maybe the producers should try coming up with something completely NEW for a change. Or are they going to work their ONE idea into the ground?

Hi!!! TBH, I had a VERY HARD TIME selecting just ONE spin off! I loved how 1883 gave us the backstory, I just simply LOVED 1923 romanticism as well as history into the Duttons; Marshalls because Kaycee is EXCELLENT & I HOPE HE DOESNT FALL FOR THE SWINDLING BILLIONAIRE OR HIS BLONDE DAUGHTER!! I love how it incorporated both sides of who he is; and the Dutton Ranch for RIP n Beth's love story struggles, parallels between RIP and Beth vs Carter and Oriana ( even tho i cant stand her, she's evil where Beth was always pissed off for her life battles rooted by Jamie & her moms death and of course Johns) I also cannot STAND Rob Will but I think 10P will find a way to blame it on Rip!! ( then he'll face prison and Beth ain't having it!)

Finally, im still waiting on the 4- 6's

Marshalls. Makes TV fun to watch again. Don’t even watch the others!

I appreciate that we can watch the show without paying extra for Paramount +.

All are good in their own way. Tough to compare since two of them are staged in totally different times. Personally, I like Marshals the best of the four, followed next by 1923, 1883 and then Dutton Ranch.
