‘General Hospital’s Kelly Monaco Promises to ‘Give a Proper Statement’ About Unexpected Exit From Soap
Kelly Monaco got candid about her departure from General Hospital after claims she was fired for refusing to take a pay cut.
In a since-deleted comment on a post made to Soap Hub Instagram per Soap Opera Network, Monaco who played Sam McCall on the ABC daytime hit, responded to fans who left comments suggesting she had “no primary role” or that she wouldn’t take a pay cut and was therefore fired.
The response was made on a post about Monaco’s former costar Greg Vaughan, who played Lucky Spencer on the soap, as he showed support for Monaco following her sudden departure after years. “‘No primary role’… do your homework,” Monaco began.

“When Billy Miller was fired, Sam’s storyline stopped. Stripping Sam of every characteristic she had. Something I worked for decades to build… Slowly dismantling her, into a character that I did not recognize, let alone the audience.”
“Call it what you will… retaliation at [sic] it finest. I will give a proper statement,” she continued. “The truth will set you free.”
Monaco’s exit and the writing off of her character, Sam, was unveiled officially in August 2024. And since then there have been several fan campaigns to try and salvage her role.
“The truth will set you free,” she shared in the since-deleted comment.
While we await Monaco’s official statement regarding her GH exit, she’s continued to remain in the headlines, particularly in September when she paid tribute to the late Miller on the anniversary of his death. Miller portrayed Jason Morgan among other characters in General Hospital until 2019 when he exited the soap. Miller died at the age of 43 in September 2023.

Still upset to see Kelly lose her role as Sam. She has always been a stellar actress and will be missed. I’m sure we will see Kelly playing another role on another soap opera or movie. Bad decision to let her die. You could have just put her in a hospital or even kidnapped but to kill her off; sorry but stupid move

I started watching this show back in 2003 with one of my family members that always would play it. The ONLY reason I started watching this show was because of Sam and Jason being together. They had an incredible love story and dynamic.When Steve left I stopped watching but would check in from time to time on Kelly. Yes her character changed a lot and was becoming a character I did not enjoy to see, but their characters were a strong part of my life. Thanks GH for killing off a 21 year veteran and making her character/ Kelly as an actress feel so not appreciated for all of her years she dedicated to this role. After 21 years of on and off watching due to both actors coming and going. I will officially not be watching the show anymore. Sorry Steve! I don’t see another love interest for you either that had the chemistry like you and Kelly, but like Jason told Sam in their last scene “I remember it all”.

I have been a fan of GH for 48 years. I have so enjoyed Kelly as Sam for the past 20+. To kill the character off is a travesty. GH isn’t for me anymore think I wil move on to something else

I was sorry to hear that Sam was being written off on General Hospital. I will be sad to see Kelly go. I would have liked to see her character get back together with Jason. Jason and Anna--what are the writers thinking?

No one else can play Sam like Kelly. Sad move GH- it’s sad previous actors have died in real life and can’t bring back. The subs playing Sam’s role are horrible. Sam was a woman that loved the bad boy. Pairing her with good guys was not right. She was an awesom good/bad girl!!!

Personally I think Sam’s character was destroyed the day she watched Jake get kidnapped and Jason taking her back was the day that Jason’s character got destroyed.
Let’s face it, she’s been pissed for 5 years that Billy was fired and it showed. If she couldn’t do her job properly over that, she should have left long ago. The fact that they fired her now, well it’s about time.

I think GH is one of the greatest soap operas that have stood the time through thick and thin.Kelly is a great actress though I will admit I liked her best when she was with Jason.Anna and Jason I just don't see that,ide rather see Jason back with Carly.
Why kill Kelly?? Couldn't you have just put her on a leave,why kill off your best long time actress's ?
Hopefully when the fire burns down the writters of GH will decide to bring Kelly back and her pay will stay the same..why cut her pay anyway,?Now Dante has to grieve the loss of Kelly while LuLu comes back to life.Will LuLu fall in love with Dante again???
