Are you ready to say goodbye to Daryl and Carol? The apocalypse’s best BFFs are preparing for one final motorcycle ride into the sunset as The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon spinoff gears up for its fourth and final season premiering on AMC this February.

Stars Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride visited TV Insider’s New York Comic-Con 2026 studio alongside showrunner David Zabel and The Walking Dead Universe Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple to chat about the last exciting outing for the beloved characters, set in Spain. “It was kind of bittersweet,” says Reedus of saying goodbye to Daryl. “There was a story arc that we wanted to get through, which was a revolving thing since Episode 1 of the spinoff. It’s the idea of trying to find out what ‘home’ means and being comfortable in your skin with whatever that answer’s going to be. So I think where we ended up, it was very satisfying to sort of answer [that] question.”

“A home is a great metaphor for lots of things,” McBride notes. “Home is where you are. Home is where somebody you love is. Home is an idea, an ideal, and it is a great theme to explore.”

“The search for home is kind of a search for self,” adds Zabel. “And so for both of them, what you’ll see over the course of the four years, and especially the fourth season, is a search for who they are and who they want to be at this point in their lives, and at this point in what the world has become.”

The group also welcomes Emmy-winner Jimmy Smits onto the cast as Captain Alejandro Perkins, a former U.S. Navy Officer and medic. “[His character] represents this kind of idea of America,” says Zabel. “He becomes this very interesting, dynamic character who’s very important to both of them in different ways.”

“He’s a really complex character,” teases Reedus. “His story is also on this home theme, but very, very different as well.”

And with this being the last planned Dead series at the moment, will there be more? “We’re not saying goodbye to the universe,” confirms Gimple. “I’m going to give a spoiler: The world does not blow up at the end of the season. If the world doesn’t blow up, the story continues one way or another — the story of The Walking Dead universe.”
