Peter Kramer / CBS

Blue Bloods is ending with Season 14. The first half of the final season kicks off in February, with Part Two coming out later this year. Although the ending isn’t written yet, the series promises to “go out with a bang.” Star Tom Selleck issued a touching statement to fans when the series’ end was announced.

“For the past 13 years it has been an honor and a privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve in New York City, but also displayed the importance of family,” he said. “Working alongside these incredible actors, writers, producers, directors and crew has been a dream come true and I’m grateful to have been a part of this extraordinary group for over 275 episodes. Thank you to CBS Studios and CBS Network for their steadfast support and we offer heartfelt gratitude to the fans who gathered with us for dinner every Friday night.”

Now, the star prepares to conclude this long-running CBS drama. We asked the big-picture questions, and Selleck answered.

How are you feeling about Blue Bloods ending?

Tom Selleck: CBS will find an awful lot of people aren’t ready to say goodbye to it. The show’s more popular than ever, and I think [numbers] will increase with the interest this year. We’re certainly not out of ideas.

So you’re not ready to retire to your Ventura, California, ranch just yet?

I’m not counting the days so I can do something else. I love the work. Sometimes the hours are a little harder because I’m older, but so what? I want work as long as they’ll have me.

Is Frank getting ready to retire?

He picks fights because he’d like somebody to take the weight of this responsibility [off] his hands and fire him. But he has a hyperactive sense of responsibility and he’s stuck with it.

What about Blue Bloods makes you most proud?

Playing a flawed but strong father. On television and commercials, Dad is usually the idiot. It’s not my mission on the show, but the by-product is an example of an important patriarch to the family. That’s getting rarer in our culture.

How important to the show’s success is the weekly Reagan family dinner?

It’s the audience’s favorite part. When I saw the eight-page dinner scene in [exec producer] Leonard Goldberg’s pilot script, I said, “They’re going to cut that, aren’t they?” And he answered, “No, that will be a centerpiece of the show.” He was right.

Blue Bloods, Season 14 Premieres Friday, February 16, 10/9c, CBS

I don’t get it. The cast is willing. The fans are there. How do they justify ending one of their strongest offerings? I guess they are trying to capture a younger audience but let me remind them, “a bird in the hand is worth more than the elusive younger bird in the bush.”

Tom Selleck isn’t well…. He’s had some recent and serious health issues and my guess is that at his age, the producers don’t want to risk another season….

In an ensemble program like Blue Bloods they could easily reduce Selleck’s part and beef up the parts of his children,

The powers to be need to realize that the younger audience that they’re wanting to get doesn’t stay in on a Friday night. I absolutely love Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck, the entire cast, I especially like the dinner scenes the generation that I grew up in and I will say I am a baby boomer who has retired really want to see this type of show and not the reality shows of amazing race, survivor, and yes, I know bachelors not on this network but my God how many times do you have to have the bachelor, bachelorette, bachelor in Paradise, the golden bachelor. All of those shows are stupid. Maybe they could go ahead and do a spin off not name it Blue Bloods but keep the Reagan family there have Danny and Jamie have their have a show spin off or even Joe Hill who we never have really gotten to see that much of.

Reality TV has lower overhead. Personally, I don't care for Reality TV.

It wouldn't surprise me that Netflix or Amazon or anther streaming network picks the show up.

There will never be a show like this ever again. They can never duplicate the cast, writing or the general feeling of family the show represented. It’s a shame CBS never really looked at the bigger picture. All they saw were dollars. The certainly could have cut other shows that really don’t mean that much to the public

Only two or three shows we watch on network TV and this is our favorite. Most shows on all networks are junk. Leave the good one on tv.

There are stories that did not get their due in the series, such as: jamko’s relationship and their scenes together, and joe hill

If I were CBS, I would be developing a series for the character of Joe Hill right now. They would stay in the business of the Reagan Family, keep the crew employed, and re-set the cost of the series. Reagan family members could guest star here and there.

I look forward to watching Blue Bloods every Friday. I love the cast and hate to see it end. I agree with Mr Selleck there is more stories to tell and unfortunately we won't get to see them. There won't be no better shows coming on after this show ends and I hate that.

I concur with all that you said. I can watch this series over and over again. Watching now as a matter of fact to prepare for the final season. This show brings tears somehow every episode moves me. Absolutely love the family dinner scenes and the genuine vibes of love they seem to feel for each other. I’m really going to miss this show. If the law and order series’ can last 20+ years ..why not Blue Bloods? Especially if the cast is willing🤔

No, please don't end Blue Bloods. My favorite show and I really enjoy the newest member of th family, Joe. I love the family dinners, I feel like I am part of the family sometimes because I wish I had a family that sat down for Sunday dinner. I have watched the entire season over 10 times. Please save Blue Bloods. I love you Tom Selleck. I loved you in Folks also.

This is one more good thing to take away from us. It encourages family, loyalty, respect, especially respect for our first responders!! We can't have our younger generations be subjected to a show like this that just might make them a better person.. Family dinners with no cell phones allowed where u have to actually talk to each other? They really don't want to promote this ! NO!! Can't have that!!

I never watched this show till I sat with my mom while she watched. I got instantly hooked and we went back to S1E1 and now binge watch it! We need more!

Thank u to all the actors and creators for this show! Please don't take it away!

I love Blue Bloods. And Tom Selleck is the best actor of all time. Perfection is everywhere and goals for the world to follow. The five men disagree a lot but love forever. Send my love to them while acknowledge "what a great cast". What a mistake to remove my favorite tv program.

My sister told me she got hooked on Blue Bloods because of the dinner scenes. That's what got me going. I only watch Blue Bloods, NCIS franchise, and FBI on CBS.. When Blue Bloods is gone I'll be down 1 show. I'll miss it a lot

ABSOLUTELY LOVE 'BLUE BLOODS' & THE ENTIRE CAST!!!! I've watched it from the very beginning & have the ALL the seasons so far released on DVD which I will keep FOREVER. I also have EVERYTHING ever released of Tom Selleck movies on VHS & DVD...LOVE THAT MAN!!!!! The IDIOT powers that be are always cancelling the GREAT shows & leaving nothing but JUNK on network TV which I HATE...& the reason I've stopped watching network TV several years ago except for a handful of great shows like Blue Bloods, Chicago P.D. & Chicago Fire Jeopardy. No interest at all in any of the junk so called Realty, Dancing with the Stars & Voice shows AT ALL.....NEVER WATCH THAT NONSENSE. CBS...CANCEL YOUR CANCELING OF BLUE BLOODS....YOUR VIEWERS DEMAND IT!!!!

I will not be watching CBS anymore except the final season of Blue Bloods. The one show that is clean, has great stories, and great cast is being taken off. Very few shows on TV anymore that are good and/or decent to watch. So a network that is taking off a show that the cast and fans want can lose me as an audience.

I have been a fan since the beginning. My favorite TV show all time. I had to google to find out why they would cancel the show. Somehow I think CBS can cancel or change a couple of other shows and pay the expenses for this show. Never did get enough of Joe Hill, nor whatever might happen with Jamie and. Edie, or if Danny finds a new love, like his partner. There are so many episodes to be written. And I love Tom Selleck. Period. Would be good to see him age and maybe he could find a new partner. havent seen him with a secret love lately. Maybe another company might buy the show. Bring it on.

Very sad to see Blue Bloods end tonight. I actually “teared up” like I was saying goodbye to close friends. 😢 I will miss the actors portraying the closeness of their characters and their stories. Greatly will miss Tom Selleck leading the wonderful family dinners saying grace which is a rarity in real life. Greatful that CBS brought the Blue Bloods series to viewers to begin with. It was reported the CBS president stated that “All shows have to come to an end.”

  18. R

    RedApple

Like I said the CBS President "Amy Reisenbach" and all of her CBS Lackey are payed High Wages for what they are putting on the Air for CBS Fans to watch show that are JUNK!! LIKE Survivor ( Which is all fake; everything is Prep and made safe for each member) SWAT (no story line just a shoot up scenes and high crime shit) But Blue Bloods is the opposite to her way of thought, she doesn't want people to come together, and that's want Blue Bloods dose to everyone who watches Blue Bloods, and that why it lasted 14 Season, because everyone connects to the show, and it makes people to care for other people too.!!

  19. R

    RedApple

If it cost too much for CBS to Make Blue Bloods, then CBS should Sell the Series to another network and make money on the sell of that series, I'm sure the other network would jump at the chance to buy the series from CBS, again CBS have a chance to make money if they sell the series to another network, but they rather kill the series than to sell it and make money too, but if they sold the Blue bloods to another network the other network will make money with series and maybe make more money than CBS did, and I'm sure that the President also thought that out and that's Why CBS will not Sell Blue Bloods to another Network, so by ending the Blue Bloods, CBS can keep it and Bury it Away in their own graveyard forever.!!

  20. R

    RedApple

CBS say it is the Cost of the series of Blue Bloods to make, and Yet Survivor Cost more to make than Blue Bloods and to make it Worse is that it is all fake, from the members and how they find and cook the food( which is already prep for then to pick and to cook without getting sick) also the show already has pick the winner before the show start it new season already, which they don't tell the Viewers??!! Also The President of CBS and all of CBS Big Shorts should have a Pay Cut too, that would save CBS lots of Money Too, The CBS President is living high on high Wage for what she dose!! and just putting show that have no Storylines, no Values, and just junk like Shooting people, People of Race against each other people of race, and no family Value, and they wonder why todays Society is that none give a care anymore!!

  21. R

    RedApple

It's because CBS and the President " Amy Reisenbach Dose Not Care About The Fans that take the time to watch their shows, So if the Fans was smart and not watch any thing that CBS Put on the Air, If the Fans would Drop or Void anything from CBS, Then CBS would change there Minds when CBS falls to a New Low Rating and they are losing there Shirts, than maybe CBS would Care about the Fans Then.!!

  22. R

    RedApple

I think that when CBS ends the TV series of Blue Bloods, That all of the fans and all the people that have share of CBS sell their share off or even Void CBS and Drop CBS of all of their shows, Because CBS and Their President " Amy Reisenbach doesn't give a Shit about the Fans that take the time to watch their show, NOT TOO MANY SHOWS LAST 14 SEASON, Blue Bloods has a diverse of story line in each Episodes, That What Makes it so Good, and Why it last 14 Seasons, I'd watch a show call S.W.A.R.T and half way through season one i got sick and tired of the show, because it was always the same thing over and over again, really no story line but a butch of cop going into a shout Situation, were the people are protrade as idiots to the S.W.A.R.T. Cops. Don't forget that if there was no fans watching your CBS stations, CBS would not EXCESS, So Amy Reisenbach should RESIGN or STAND DOWN!!!

  23. G

    GreenGoggles

I think Amy Reisenbach needs to pull her head out of what ever hole she has it stuffed in!!!!!

Blue Bloods is a fantastic show, with fantastic actors and it needs to be continued!!!!!

If it is canceled I hope CBS loses their fans forever!

  24. G

    GreenGoggles

Blue Bloods is the best show on tv! How idiotic to cancel a show that is still at the top. I can't wait for Friday nights so I get to watch Blue Bloods! This is a very stupid move CBS!!!!!

  25. C

    CyanLamp

Blue Bloods is one of only a few shows that is more “normal”. It’s shows a family dealing with their issues and also people can see a family sitting at the dinner table having a meal. Most families don’t know what that is. It’s better than all this sci-fi junk. I’m a regular watching Blue Bloods and I wish you would reconsider. Please. Thanks.

Thought this show had at least two more seasons left. Hopefully, we'll learn the fate of Jamko the dog, as will Danny and Baez get together. Maybe a family dinner with Nicky, Joe, Joe's mother, Jack Reagan, and Jack Doyle.

I think Tom Selleck is awesome and I would love to see him in some new Jesse Stone movies. I normally watch his old movies on cold, blistery winter nights and would be thrilled to see some new ones!! I'm sure there are lots of people who feel the same way.

Can’t believe a well written, brilliantly acted show that one can watch with their entire family is being canceled while garbage reality shows are becoming more plentiful. No wonder our society is losing it’s good values and class. Going to miss Blue Bloods and the Regan family terribly. Hope this decision is reversed.
