After being shut down halfway through the competition because of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Amazing Race Season 33 has finally come to a close. The finale aired March 2 on CBS, and it was an intense race to the finish and that $1 million prize.

Contestants started filming in February 2020. After production resumed 19 months later, seven teams returned to compete. The season took the teams to seven countries and 17 cities. And by the finale, only four teams remained: best friends Ryan Ferguson and Dusty Harris, flight attendants Raquel Moore and Cayla Platt, married YouTubers Kim and Penn Holderness, and father-daughter duo Arun and Natalia Kumar.

To start, the four teams flew from Greece to Portugal and had to make it to Fortale De São Filipe in Setúbal. Once there, they were faced with a nautical challenge in “Who Wants to Go Exploring?”

The teams had to row across the marina in boats named after Portuguese explorers. The twist: other boats named after random celebrities were also mixed in. They couldn’t cross the marina unless they were in one of the correct vessels.

Raquel and Kim started off by correctly selecting boats named after Bartolomeu Dias and Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan). Arun and Ryan both chose incorrect vessels, but Ryan beat Arun to the Vasco da Gama boat. Kim was the first to make it across the marina.

While Kim and Penn, Raquel and Cayla, and Dusty and Ryan got to work on painting the image of a can of sardines onto a wooden door at the Mercearia Confianca de Troino restaurant, Arun was still struggling to choose the right boat. He eventually made it across the marina in the boat named after Pedro Álvares Cabral.

Raquel and Cayla took the lead, but then realized they left their map behind, forcing them to turn back. Kim and Penn then made it to the church in Santuário do Cabo Espichel, where the contestants had to count all of its columns.

The next Pit Stop was a nearby lighthouse. Raquel and Cayla made it first, winning themselves a trip to St. Lucia in the process. Kim and Penn came in second, Dusty and Ryan came in third, and Arun and Natalia’s race ended when they came in last.

The next and last destination for Season 33 was Los Angeles. After finding their clues, Raquel and Cayla and Kim and Penn arrived at the El Pueblo de Los Angeles monument at the same time. Dusty and Ryan fell behind in this leg, struggling to figure out that the clue they needed was on the outside of an elevator.

The two teams had to smash piñatas to unlock three parts of the next clue, with one teammate being blindfolded while the other gave directions. Raquel and Cayla finished first and left for S.I.R. Hollywood. Kim and Penn left before Dusty and Ryan arrived.

The next challenge was a tribute to The Amazing Race‘s memorable moments over the last 20 years. The teams had to add Foley sounds that synced up with the audio from old clips from famous episodes. Raquel and Cayla were first to finish, yet again, but Kim and Penn were catching up quickly. Ryan and Dusty were far, far behind.

Finally, the teams were challenged to a memory quiz recounting the events of the season (including the gnome). Both Raquel and Cayla and Kim and Penn were getting their answers right, but then started changing their responses.

In the end, Kim and Penn came out on top and became the official winners of The Amazing Race Season 33. Raquel and Cayla came in second, and Dusty and Ryan came in last.
