7 Burning Questions for ‘Will Trent’ Season 5

WILL TRENT - “Our Last Dance” - Reeling yet relentless, the team hunts Adelaide and searches for Antonio. As Adelaide systematically eliminates her own acolytes, Will teeters on the edge, haunted by a grief so strong it could unravel the team. TUESDAY, APRIL 21 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC. The fourth season of Will Trent was a devastating one for multiple reasons. The last few episodes saw the deaths of not one but two major characters: Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn), whose sudden demise left a hole in the GBI that will be hard to fill; and Dr. Seth (Scott Foley), whose death left Angie (Erika Christensen) a widow and single parent to their newborn, Edie.

Plus, Will (Ramón Rodríguez) grappled with some serious trauma this season thanks to the return of James Ulster (Greg Germann) and the arrival of his daughter Adelaide (Mallory Jansen), who kidnapped Will’s Uncle Antonio (John Ortiz) and very nearly killed him, too.

Suffice it to say, a lot happened. However, there are still some major question marks about what lies ahead in Season 5, when the show returns to ABC. Here are the most burning questions we have.

Will Trent, Season 5, Premiere Date TBA, ABC

WILL TRENT - “The Blank Expanse of Nothing” - Faith and Ormewood investigate a girl’s alien abduction claim and uncover a darker truth. Meanwhile, Amanda uncovers FBI warnings about Adelaide and a mysterious “Commander” figure linked to Will. TUESDAY, APRIL 14 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC. (Disney/Matt Miller) SONJA SOHN

Who will replace Amanda as deputy director?

Though it seemed as if Appleyard (Jason Davis), who filled in for Amanda during medical leave from her shooting injury, might take the job as deputy director of the GBI, that apparently will not be the case.

As coshowrunner Karine Rosenthal explained to TV Insider, “We will have a new deputy director of the GBI coming in. So, for the fans who assumed that we were grooming Appleyard for the position, he was more of a stepping stone. He might be back to help with some transition, but there will be a new person with a new dynamic for Will and Faith, and that’ll be interesting, and hopefully set up some new types of conflicts.”

WILL TRENT - “Where’d You Come From, Little Angel?” - Will and the team investigate a string of murders, uncovering a case far from ordinary. Alone and grieving, Will faces a peril that leaves every breath a race against time. TUESDAY, APRIL 28 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC. (Disney/Daniel Delgado Jr.) RAMÓN RODRIGUEZ, IANTHA RICHARDSON

How will the new partnerships work out?

The finale introduced some new changes to the professional dynamics at GBI and APD, as Will is now partnering with Michael Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin), while Faith (Iantha Richardson) will be working more closely with Angie.

Liz Heldens explained of the decision, “In Episode 5, ‘Nice to Meet You, Malcolm,’ when Ormewood and Will are sitting in his Porsche, and they’re kind of talking and bonding and giving each other s**t, and we were just like, ‘More of that, more of that, let’s do that!’ And I always love when Angie and Faith work together or have scenes together. I mean, it’s not forever, but it just seemed like a fun [idea] going into Season 5: ‘Let’s just do a little shuffle and see how that feels.'”

Will Angie and Will ever be romantic again?

The death of Seth was gutting for Angie. It meant the end of a truly healthy and happy relationship, and of course, the loss of her best friend. She was overcome with depression for months afterward, and Will recognized the depth of her pain, instantly taking a leave of absence to help — along with Nico (Cora Lu Tran) and Betty — raise the baby until Angie was ready to do so. When Angie did finally emerge from her state of crippling sorrow, Will remained in the picture, and the two became something of a family unit. Considering their history, is there a chance they could be together in a romantic sense again?

Rosenthal said of the question, “We don’t need to rush to have the two of them be romantically involved anymore because they get to be together in a new way that we haven’t seen before. That’s kind of been the exciting thing about those two. They’re such a special relationship, but at each stage of the series, we’ve seen them in very different configurations. And so this end of the season, into next season, is a whole new way, where it’s like healthy friends, co-parenting, very special people. And so we’ll see whether another person comes into that mix and then they have to navigate that again, or if it slowly leads to them trying again at some point, we’ll see. We’ll see how the series progresses.”

WILL TRENT - “Be of Service” - A missing college student ignites a frantic search that quickly reveals something far more dangerous than a simple abduction. As the team races to uncover the truth, Angie, on the brink of motherhood, heads to the hospital with Seth. TUESDAY, MAY 5 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC. (Disney/Daniel Delgado Jr.) JAKE MCLAUGHLIN

Is Ormewood's brain tumor gone?

Ormewood had to reckon with being slowed down on the job by his chemotherapy treatments — which produced some accidentally hilarious moments, like when he and a very pregnant Angie tried to chase down a perp — but we don’t yet know if he is fully recovered from the illness.

Is Sara Linton going to join the show?

In the Karin Slaughter books upon which Will Trent is based, the character Sara Linton becomes a major love interest of Will’s. The show has made some major changes to the characters, of course, including making Angie much more of a redemptive person than she is in literary form, so we’re left to wonder if Sara is ever going to become a part of the ABC version of the story.

What will happen with the trafficking investigation?

One major dangling thread in the Season 4 finale is the sex trafficking investigation that Faith is taking charge on. After the alien abduction case proved to be so much more in Season 4, she realized that the scale of the trafficking organization was massive — including, possibly, politicians and even people she could work for. She, Will, Angie, Ormewood, and Franklin (Kevin Daniels) are all working on this together, so what will they uncover in Season 5?

Is Will going to continue being traumatized?

Will sought therapy from Dr. Roach (Margaret Cho) throughout Season 4, due to his lingering trauma from his rotten childhood and also his guilt over the officer-involved shooting of a teenager that resulted in the boy’s death at Will’s hands. We saw him process his grief over Amanda while he was unconscious and dreamt of working through it with the younger version of the character, but surely, there are still feelings to be had there. As he steps up to be a coparent with Angie, will he continue to seek treatment, or is he past that point?

I was disappointed with this season’s writing. The writers made mistakes with their direction. The Ulster story line was annoying. I couldn’t wait for the story line to end. And why writers think they must injure or kill characters to end a season is beyond me. There was no reason for them to kill off Amanda. And why can’t a character have a happy story line (Angie & Seth). BTW. The car was T-Boned on the passenger side - not the drivers side. Was was Seth hurt more than Angie then?

Please no more Will depression. PLEASE NO MORE Ulster story line. AlSO it is too soon for Angie to be in any relationship. I’d like them to bring Sara Linton into the story. Stick truer to the book. The writers didn’t need to kill Amanda or Seth.

Not sure it can be saved at this point.

So sad how they killed this show. Sounds like it's not going to get much better. I feel bad for the actors, being given such terrible material to work with. I used to really love it, but they drained every ounce of charm out of it.

Big mistake letting Amanda and Seth go. That could really drop the ratings. Not even sure if I’ll watch it next season. They never even said how Seth died. The ending was not good at all. They got rid of 2 great people that also made the show worth watching. What were the writers thinking??? Bad choices.

Am I the only one wondering if Dr Roach is real or Will working his way through it himself? Earlier in the series we had scenes of him "in his head" figuring out things. Or have I just watched too much tv where two characters are alone and not interacting beyond the two shot? (OK, I was one of the people who watched Brilliant Minds and the imaginary patient"
