What To Know

  • As expected, Will Trent is bringing in a new deputy director for the GBI after Amanda Wagner’s death.
  • Here’s what we know about Birdie, a new character from The Pitt star Alexandra Metz, so far.

Ever since Season 4’s finale of Will Trent, we’ve known that a new deputy director will be in the house at the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, and now we know who that person is.

Deadline reports that The Pitt‘s Alexandra Metz has joined the show for Season 5 as Birdie Palmer, the newly-appointed boss of Will (Ramón Rodríguez) and Faith (Iantha Richardson) at the department, and she’s described as “confident, ambitious, and razor-sharp” but also “deeply guarded by a life-altering event from her past.”

The casting news comes after the unexpected death of Sonja Sohn‘s Amanda Wagner, who was killed by an acolyte of James Ulster’s (Greg Germann) daughter Adelaide (Mallory Jansen) while tracking them on a solo mission.

Coshowrunner Karine Rosenthal told TV Insider that fans could expect to see a new face take over the role of the deputy director position, rather than simply having Bill Appleyard (Jason Davis) inherit the role after he filled for Amanda during her medical leave (and seemed eager to make that a permanent position for himself).

“Well, we will have a new deputy director of the GBI coming in. So, for the fans who assumed that we were grooming Appleyard for the position, he was more of a stepping stone. He might be back to help with some transition, but there will be a new person with a new dynamic for Will and Faith, and that’ll be interesting, and hopefully set up some new types of conflict. And then, we’re excited about having the big trafficking story that really kind of centers Faith and Angie and is there as kind of a touchstone, but it’s not like the whole show will be about that every week. It just kind of will be nice to have that ongoing case and the new fun partner dynamics that we set up,” Rosenthal explained.

According to the trade, Metz, who stars as Dr. Yolanda Garcia in HBO’s acclaimed medical drama The Pitt, is still expected to appear in Season 3 of that series.
