TV Insider’s exclusive promo leans into that — as well as his passionate, complicated dynamic with Jaina Lee Ortiz‘s Emilia “Emi” Ochoa. She brings him jobs, and there are clearly sparks as they work together. In fact, as he remarks, “I can tell when you’re lying. I just don’t mind it.”

The new drama is inspired by Carl Hiaasen’s novel Double Whammy. It follows former newspaper photographer and ex-con RJ Decker, who starts over as a private investigator in South Florida. Each week, he tackles cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre, working with his journalist ex (Adelaide Clemens‘ Catherine), her wife, Detective Mel (Bevin Bru), his former cellmate (Kevin Rankin‘s Wish), and the mysterious Emi, with whom he shares a past. But, as the official description notes, she “could be his greatest ally … or his one-way ticket back to prison.”

Scott Speedman as R.J. Decker
RJ previously was the photographer for the Broward County Herald before one of his colleagues was murdered and he lost his cool and assaulted a young man stealing his camera equipment. He served 18 months in prison, and now, he’s a private investigator. Described as someone with “a short fuse and a restless soul, compassionate yet tough with charm to spare,” he “has a good grasp of human nature and instincts honed by years of seeing the world through the unforgiving eye of a camera.”
Jaina Lee Ortiz as Emilia "Emi" Ochoa
Mel is “no-nonsense, professional, capable of thinking outside the box,” and not the biggest fan of her wife’s ex-husband. However, RJ’s PI work does impress her, and soon, the two do find a way to work together. She also has a tween daughter from a previous relationship.
Bevin Bru as Melody "Mel" Abreu

Kevin Rankin as Aloysius "Wish" Aiken
Wish is “devoted” to his former cellmate and has told Catherine, “Shame you and RJ didn’t go the distance. But me and him, we’re in it for the long haul.” He’s “charming in an off-kilter sort of way, smarter than you’d think, and a Pal with a capital P.” He owns the local bar, F.M. Station, with F.M. meaning Florida Man.

Catherine is a journalist who still has a soft spot for her ex-husband and so she tries to help out when she can. She’s described as “brilliant, funny, [and] kind.”
