Outlander‘s final chapter is approaching, and Starz didn’t hold back during the show’s panel presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, where they revealed Season 8’s premiere window and first real teaser trailer.

Appearing on behalf of the series were stars Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, and executive producers Matthew B. Roberts and Maril Davis. During the panel presentation, they presented this exciting first look at the final chapter of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser’s (Heughan) love story.

And although the teaser is brief, it packs quite a punch, hinting at some major plotlines to unfold. As fans know by now, Starz’s hit romantic fantasy series is based on the hit books by Diana Gabaldon and chronicles the epic relationship between time-traveling World War II combat nurse Claire and 18th-century Highlander Jamie.

Following Season 7’s massive cliffhanger conclusion, the stakes appear to be raised significantly as they take on life and death weight. Before the two-and-a-half-minute teaser reaches Season 8 footage, it recaps the importance of time in the couple’s relationship with voiceover snippets of memorable series quotes montaged with nostalgic footage.

“Time is marked and measured in different ways,” Claire’s voice declares in the video above, adding, “Nothing can stand against time. Not mountains, not armies.” Her words are followed by Jamie’s line, “Time doesn’t matter, Sassenach… To see those years touch you gives me joy, for it means that you live”

The narration continues with the soundbite of Jamie from Season 1’s most iconic episode, “The Wedding,” as he recalls, “I remember every moment, every second,” from the ceremony. And you can’t have an Outlander look back without Claire’s reveal to Jamie, “I’m from the future.”

It’s the trailer’s final 30 seconds that really capture our attention regarding what is ahead for the Frasers as we near the finish line. As title cards note, “Every promise, every sacrifice, every moment has led to this.”

Below, we’re breaking down all of the major moments we picked up on in that first real Season 8 teaser from San Diego Comic-Con. Scroll down for a closer look and let us know your thoughts on the latest reveals in the comments section.

Is Jamie's Fate Already Written?

In a book written by Claire’s first husband, Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), it prophesies that Jamie will die, as he tells Claire, “I’ve been reading Frank’s book,” and when she asks what it says, he reveals, “War is coming to the backcountry and that James Fraser dies in it.” Does this mean death is looming close on the horizon for the show’s “King of Men”? While we’re certainly on high alert, we’re not allowing a document to destroy our hope. In Gabaldon’s Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, Frank does have a book that is published posthumously in the 1900s, and it insinuates that Jamie will die in a battle known as the Battle of King’s Mountain. But considering the obituary projecting Claire and Jamie’s death previously was a mistake, we’re keeping hope alive that Jamie’s death is merely talk and nothing else.

Bloody Hands Raise a Red Flag

While we’re keeping hope alive that Jamie’s death is merely a rumor, blood on what appear to be Claire’s hands is certainly a cause for concern. Although we know she helps injured individuals as a healer, Claire’s bloodier cases often have life-or-death stakes. Could these bloody hands be hinting at such a thing? It seems possible.

Brianna & Roger Returned

In the books, Brianna (Skelton) eventually reunites with her parents amid the Revolutionary War, and it appears, based on the setting behind her, that she’s back in that time and place. After settling in the future for some years to provide their daughter with the proper care for her heart defect, Bree and Roger (Rankin) were forced back into the past after a trick by Rob Cameron (Chris Fulton). As fans will recall, Season 7’s ending found them in the 1700s, crossing paths with Brian Fraser (Andrew Whipp) years before Jamie and Claire ever met. The snippet of Brianna and Roger in the teaser seems to insinuate they’ve moved on from where they were.

Lord John & William Reconnecting

After learning the truth that Jamie Fraser was his biological father, William (Charles Vandervaart) had seemingly shut out Lord John Grey (David Berry) for good, but a snippet from the teaser seems to hint at an upcoming reunion for the adoptive father-son duo. Can they make amends following the lies? The fact that they’re in the same space is a good sign, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Claire's Near-White Hair

Sure, lighting can have an impact on how certain colors appear, but even with darker lighting in some of the teaser’s scenes, this image of Claire clearly hints at the passage of time as her hair is lightest here. Could the obvious sign of her aging be a promising indication that Jamie has managed to survive beyond Frank’s projection in his book? It’s something to ponder.

Ian's Transformation

Ian (John Bell) went through quite a lot of change in Season 7, so it’s not too shocking to notice some physical differences in his appearance, particularly when it comes to his embracing of Mohawk traditions. While his hair remains pretty similar, Ian’s markings on his face have faded even more, and he’s donning less jewelry. Whether this is just an indication of his aging or a conscious decision, we’re eager to see what the next chapter has in store for this young man in the latest phase of his life.
