‘Normal People’s Marianne & Connell Come to Life in First Look at Hulu Series (PHOTOS)
The characters of Sally Rooney’s acclaimed novel Normal People are coming to Hulu in a brand new series with the same title.
Announced back in May of this year, the series hails from directors Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie McDonald with Sally Rooney adapting alongside writers Alice Birch and Mark O’Rowe. Normal People is a 12-episode 30-minute drama chronicling the story of Marianne and Connell.
Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal star in the lead roles as the show covers the characters’ complicated relationship beginning with the end of their school days in a small town in the west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College in Dublin.
In their early years growing up, Marianne’s a quiet and lonely but proud young woman; meanwhile, Connell is fairly outgoing. When Connell goes to Marianne’s house to pick up his mother (played by Dublin Murders‘ Sarah Greene) who cleans at the house, a connection grows between them.
When they attend Trinity College together, Marianne finds her rhythm with a new set of friends, while Connell hangs back on the fringes, and suddenly it’s as if they’ve switched places. The show will explore the shifting dynamic between them as well as the impact that certain events can have on a person.
Hulu has released the first images from the project, offering fans of the book their first look at the characters come to life.
