Laurie Metcalf is a highly acclaimed American actress renowned for her remarkable versatility across film, television, and stage. Over the course of her decades-long career, she has built a reputation for delivering deeply nuanced, emotionally grounded performances that resonate with both critics and audiences alike. Her work has earned her widespread praise, industry recognition, and numerous prestigious awards, cementing her status as one of the most respected performers of her generation.

She’s also firmly carved out a niche as a go-to mom for TV and film, the kind who can ground you, guilt you, and steal the scene all in one shot.

Over the years, Metcalf has played a wide range of mother figures, from warm and well-meaning to downright terrifying (and sometimes all in the same role), each trying in her own way to steer her children onto the right path. Here’s a look at the many times Ms. Metcalf took on the role of small and big-screen matriarch, ranked by just how good a mom she really was.

11. Augusta Gein - Monster: The Ed Gein Story

Kids: Ed (Charlie Hunnam) and Henry (Hudson Oz)

In Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Metcalf plays Augusta, a fanatically religious, domineering, and abusive mother whose toxic influence directly shapes her son Ed’s descent into madness. She controls every aspect of his life, well into adulthood, driving him further and further into instability and eventually seeping into his subconscious so she continues to dominate him even after she is gone. Metcalf’s performance is chilling as she forbids Ed from forming relationships, especially with women, and instills a deep fear of sin in him. She is his protector and his tormentor, and ultimately a key factor in the collapse of his sanity.

10. Bobette Buffkin - Easy Money

Kids: Morgan (Jeff Hephner), Brandy (Katie Lowes), and Cooper (Jay R. Ferguson)

As the upbeat matriarch and leader of a family loan shark business in Easy Money, Bobette runs things with a sunny disposition and a tremendous amount of savvy, until someone crosses her. Then she sends her son, Morgan, after them. Beneath that sweet exterior is a highly protective and controlling figure who keeps her family under her thumb. She plays favorites with her children and sometimes applies that cold-blooded business sense to members of her own family. She might be smiling, but she is always calculating.

9. Jackie Harris - Roseanne

Kids: Andy Harris

Jackie Harris gave birth to her son Andy in the Season 6 episode “Labor Day,” and his arrival marked a shift for her as she navigated single motherhood after splitting from Fred Oakland, often relying on Roseanne and Dan. However, when the story continued in The Conners, Andy was never mentioned again, effectively erasing him, and Jackie’s time as a mother, from continuity.

8. Marjorie "Margie" McCarthy - The McCarthys

Kids: Gerard (Joey McIntyre), Ronny (Tyler Ritter), Jackie (Kelen Coleman)

As the opinionated matriarch of The McCarthys, Margie uses guilt and family loyalty to keep her children close, particularly when it comes to opposing her son Ronny’s desire to move away. Vocally outspoken and deeply involved in her children’s personal lives, Margie could easily be called meddlesome and nosy, but it all comes from a fierce devotion to her family and a need to keep them together.

7. Donna Allman - God, the Devil, and Bob

Kids: Megan (Nancy Cartwright)

The pragmatic, grounded wife of the titular Bob (French Stewart), who tries her best to keep the family together while attempting to stand by her husband when he says he is working for God. She even has time for self-care, returning to college after 14 years of focusing on parenting. Donna is so resilient, kind, and patient that even the Devil falls for her. And though Donna never fully believes that Bob’s on a mission from God, she continues to be a supportive wife and student.

6. Andy's Mom (Ms. Davis) - Toy Story franchise

Kids: Andy (John Morris and Jack McGraw) and Molly (Hannah Unkrich and Beatrice Miller)

Also known as Mrs. Davis, Andy’s mom is the loving single mother of Andy and Molly, to whom the toys belong. Voiced by Metcalf across the franchise, she is a devoted, kind, and pragmatic parent who works hard to keep her children happy.

And, strangely enough, her innocent household decisions usually send the toys into turmoil, whether it’s having a garage sale, bringing Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) into the family fold, or making Andy clean his room before heading off to college. So she may be bad news for toys, but she always has Andy and Molly’s best interests at heart.

5. Beatrice Carver - Grey's Anatomy

Kids: Amelia Carver (Emilee Wallace)

In a small but memorable part of Grey’s Anatomy Season 2 Episode 17, Metcalf plays Beatrice Carver, a single mother with terminal lung cancer who hides her condition from her daughter. She desperately tries to leave the hospital for her daughter’s birthday, hoping to give her “one last happy memory.”

On her deathbed, Beatrice delivers a moving monologue, offering all the advice a mother can give in a single moment before she passes. It’s a truly heartbreaking scene that fans still remember.

4. Marion McPherson - Lady Bird

Kids: Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan)

Hardworking, deeply opinionated, and fiercely loving, Marion McPherson is a nurse whose ongoing battle with her daughter makes her both the emotional anchor and, at times, the antagonist of Lady Bird. But by the end of the film, it’s clear that Marion loves her daughter deeply. Her emotional breakdown at the airport and the letters tucked into Lady Bird’s luggage after she leaves for college prove that while Marion can be just as stubborn as her daughter, she never really wanted her to go.

3. Sarah Hawkins (voice) - Treasure Planet

Kids: Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon-Levitt)

As Jim Hawkins’ hardworking mother in Disney’s 2002 film Treasure Planet, Sarah Hawkins runs the Benbow Inn and is deeply devoted to her son, whom she raised on her own after his father, Leland, abandoned them. While she isn’t always thrilled with Jim’s rebellious streak, she would do anything for him.

When pirates destroy the inn, Jim sets out to find the treasure with her in mind. In the end, using a handful of diamonds given to him by John Silver (Brian Murray), she is able to completely renovate the inn. She even gains a new employee in the form of the robot B.E.N. (Martin Short) to help with the workload.

2. Linda Morelli - Big Mistakes

Kids: Nicky (Dan Levy) and Morgan (Taylor Ortega)

As a wine-loving mom of older children with an eye on local politics, Big Mistakes‘s Linda is fueled by ambition and occasionally a little frisky (“I had a felon inside me”). But beneath it all, she loves her kids — and it shows. When Tom Donaldson crashes her BBQ to badmouth her son Nicky and his recent sex scandal, she punches him in the kisser. As Linda says herself, “No one f**ks with my family.”

1. Mary Cooper - The Big Bang Theory

Kids: Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Missy (Courtney Henggeler), and George Jr. (Jerry O’Connell)

In 2007, Metcalf was first introduced to fans of The Big Bang Theory as Sheldon’s God-fearing, Bible-reading mother, Mary Cooper — a woman who might not always understand her son or his job, but loves him with a heart the size of Texas. Introduced in Season 1’s “The Luminous Fish Effect,” Mary is “Sheldon’s Kryptonite” when he gets stubborn, but can also go full “Mama Bear” when it comes to protecting those she loves. She is often blunt and slightly tone-deaf about other cultures, but she tries her best, in earnest, to be kind and giving to all. Her religion provides the moral compass she uses to navigate family hardships…and the strength she needs to put up with Sheldon.

She was so successful and beloved in the role that when Young Sheldon came about, producers turned to her lookalike daughter, Zoe Perry, to portray the younger version of Mary Cooper in the prequel series, which premiered in 2017.
