‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ Turns 10: What We Think the Characters Are up to Now

Lorelei and Rory Gilmore Girls A Year in the Life
Netflix

For years, Gilmore Girls was one of the most beloved and nostalgia-inducing shows of our lifetime. For seven seasons, fans watched former teen mom Lorelei Gilmore (Lauren Graham) raise her daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel), through her pivotal teen years, with Season 1 beginning with Rory turning 16, the age her mother was when she had her.

The show ended with Rory graduating from college and starting a career as a journalist. Ten years later, in 2016, Netflix introduced the four-part sequel series, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which gave viewers an insight into the characters’ lives in modern-day Stars Hollow. That miniseries ended on a cliffhanger, with Rory telling her mom she’s pregnant, and since then, fans have unresolved questions.

So what would our favorite characters be up to after all this time since A Year in the Life concluded? Here are our predictions.

Lorelai Gilmore

Lorelai finally married Luke after momentarily “Doing ‘Wild’” (book version) and having to process the untimely death of her father, Richard. After their magical, romantic Alice in Wonderland-themed wedding at the hands of Kirk, they settled in Lorelai’s house.

The Dragonfly Inn has since expanded. After a conversation between Lorelai and her mother in A Year in the Life that outright mirrored the Gilmore Girls pilot, Emily agreed to give Lorelai the money needed to expand her dream. Emily wrote a check on the condition that Lorelai and Luke maintain visits throughout the year. And maintain Lorelai did.

She and Luke visit her mother “two weeks every summer and one week at Christmas,” as Emily required. Michel agreed to join her at the new and improved Dragonfly (after getting the spa he wanted), and they finally picked a chef who could uphold the legacy that is Sookie St. James’ cooking.

Lorelai continues her role as the amusing pillar in the Stars Hollow community. Planning dinners, making costumes for plays, single-handedly keeping coffee shops in business, and never letting the town traditions die. All while being an amazing grandmother to Rory’s kid.

Rory Gilmore

After watching her grow up for seven years and become the successful journalist she always dreamed of, her idealism was crushed 10 years later in A Year in the Life. We last left Rory in the middle of a confession to her mom; she’s pregnant.

Now, 10 years later, Rory will have figured out who the father is (likely Logan Huntzberger) and spends her days similar to her mother. A whimsical house in Stars Hollow, raising her kid while Logan drops in occasionally. I could see Rory with a daughter, offering a full-circle moment and always aiming to be the mother she grew up with.

The book Gilmore Girls, which she had written in A Year in the Life, was published and extremely successful, landing her a few book deals. On the side, she is a huge help on the Stars Hollow Gazette, creating a reimagined paper still read by the town. She also occasionally visits Chilton as a guest speaker for English or journalism classes and focuses on her writing, spending free time with Lane, Lorelai, and Luke, and explores the dating world as a single mother… once she finally breaks up with Paul.

Luke Danes

It’s still Luke and his “No Cell Phones” sign against the world. Even in 2026, his hatred for technology never died down. After never expanding Luke’s Diner and ignoring the wishes of Lorelai’s late father, he lives his life happily flipping burgers and spending time with his wife and grandkid. With visits from his daughter, April, of course. And Luke will retire over his dead body.

Luke and Lorelai decide against having more kids. They get to travel together (or at least to Nantucket to visit Emily) and have more financial freedom. Their grandkid fulfills that spot in their heart.

Paris and Doyle in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
Netflix

Paris Geller and Doyle McMaster

The chaotic couple, Paris and Doyle’s chemistry is far too advanced to stay separated for long. Their divorce process in A Year in the Life is just another tumultuous phase of their relationship as they ultimately ended up back together.

Both Paris and her career in surrogacy as the owner of a high-end fertility clinic and Doyle, the Hollywood screenwriter, are thriving. With Paris’s never-ending list of celebrity clientele (plenty of whom had been referred from Doyle’s movies), they are the power couple that never slows down.

They are incredibly successful financially, supporting their two kids through all the impossible standards they can throw at them.

Keiko Agena and Todd Lowe
Netflix

Lane Kim and Zach Van Gerbig

Hep Alien rocks on! As Lane and Zach get older, their music taste doesn’t budge. They, plus Brian and Gil, keep practicing, playing shows in the Stars Hollow area. Their kids, Steve and Kwan, are now 18 or 19, meaning that once they graduated, Hep Alien was able to go on another tour. With more money and real meals this time around.

Lane has now taken over Kim’s Antiques, continuing the legacy and attitude her mother put forth. They raise their kids to be rock stars. Teaching them how to sub in to Hep Alien. Rory fulfill her promise to be the twins’ Lorelai, keeping their resilient friendship.

Kelly Bishop as Emily in 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life'
Netflix

Emily Gilmore

By far the show’s most complicated character, Emily finished A Year in the Life finally discovering her independence. We saw her working as a guide at the whaling museum in Nantucket — where she moved to — but seeing how it’s been 10 years, she’s worked her way up to run the place. She spends her time working where she loves, surrounded by people who support her and let her discover who she is outside of her Hartford home.

Forever mourning the loss of Richard, Emily adores being a great-grandmother and visits Rory every spare chance.

Logan Huntzberger Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
Netflix

Logan Huntzberger

Never diminishing the Huntzberger family name, Logan always felt the pressure from his father, Mitchum, to be extraordinary. Last shown 10 years ago, he was engaged to Odette and living in London. He and Rory were having a secret affair, even though they ended the original show broken up after Rory declined his proposal. A Year in the Life ends with Logan overall choosing Odette, although that engagement likely would be short-lived, considering Logan clearly has strong leftover feelings for Rory.

Now, Logan is still living in London, as that’s where his career is and where his father’s expectations lie. He makes frequent trips to Connecticut to spend time with his kid, though, always trying to be more present than his own father was.

Milo Ventimiglia as Jess Mariano in 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life'
Netflix

Jess Mariano

The king of yearning for his high school girlfriend, Jess ended A Year in the Life with clear feelings of longing for Rory. Getting the redemption he worked for, Jess has clearly matured since he was a teenager in the original show.

A successful author, he continues on his writing path, publishing multiple books, and is happy doing so. I doubt Jess will ever willingly live in Stars Hollow, but he visits frequently. Acting as a mentor for Rory with her writing, as they’re able to bounce ideas off each other. He’s there for Rory, echoing how Luke was there for Lorelai while Rory was growing up.

Kirk and Lulu Gilmore Girls
Netflix

Kirk Gleason and Lulu Kuscher

The pride and joy of Stars Hollow, Kirk, is still keeping the job market booked and busy. He and Lulu, his long-term girlfriend, will definitely have been married by now. In A Year in the Life, they were discussing having a child, although the town combated that idea by giving them a pet pig.

Nowadays, I could see Kirk having started his own business as a job recruiter. Helping people around town find open positions and pick up shifts at businesses. He is also an avid user of job sites and LinkedIn.

He and Lulu doubtfully would have a kid, but they have cycled through different pets, giving them something to always take care of.
