‘Vixen’: CW Seed Announces Season 2 Premiere Date for Animated ‘Arrow’ Spinoff
Vixen is back on the prowl. The second season of CW Seed’s animated series based on the DC Comics hero—spinning off from the live-action Arrow universe—will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 13.
In the first season, we met Mari McCabe just as she was learning about her heritage and her powers. In Season 2 she learns how to be a hero. Over the course of six episodes Mari will be “expanding her sense of obligation beyond the borders of Detroit,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim says. “There’s a much larger world out there that needs her protection.”
Vixen (voiced by Megalyn Echikunwoke, who made her live-action debut as the character on Arrow last season) uses the mystical Tantu totem, a family heirloom, to channel the abilities of the animal kingdom. In these new episodes she’ll face off against a mysterious foe who has his own magical totem.
Along the way, she’ll cross paths with the heroes of The CW (all voiced by the live-action actors), including Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), The Flash (Grant Gustin), Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes), Atom (Brandon Routh), Firestorm (Franz Drameh and Victor Garber) and Black Canary (Katie Cassidy). (This story is set before Black Canary was killed.)
“In keeping with Mari’s journey of acknowledging that there’s a bigger world out there, we wanted to dramatize that by doubling down on the number of characters we reveal in animated form,” Guggenheim says. “It’s something that’s really cool and it’s not just a gimmick. It plays directly into Mari’s character journey.” (A new live-action version of Vixen, Mari’s grandmother, will appear in Season 2 of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.)
Following the season premiere (streaming on the CW Seed app and at cwseed.com), new episodes will be released on Fridays, giving fans five straight days of DC Comics heroes, including The CW’s prime-time line-up of Supergirl (Mondays), The Flash (Tuesdays), Arrow (Wednesdays) and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (Thursdays).
