Mexican Superstar Eugenio Derbez Developing Two Comedies for U.S. TV

Hugely successful Mexican actor, director and writer Eugenio Derbez is looking to branch into U.S. TV.

Derbez, whose 2013 film Instructions Not Included is the highest-grossing Spanish-language film of all time in the United States (and grossed nearly $100 million globally), has two comedy projects in the works here: Don’t Judge Me (for ABC) and The Great Brown Hope (for NBC).

Derbez won’t star in either, but will executive produce both projects through his Santa Monica-based production company 3pas Studios, which he runs with Ben Odell. Derbez has a first-look deal set up at Universal TV, where both projects would be produced.

Don’t Judge Me, written by actress/writer Aseem Batra (Bent) and Eduardo Cisneros (who wrote Instructions Not Included), centers on a man named Ignacio Galvez, who is raising three kids, who each have a different mother, while trying to date someone new. (The story is loosely based on Derbez’s life.)

Batra, who voiced characters on The Cleveland Show and guest starred on series such as black-ish, will executive produce as well, while Cisneros is a co-executive producer.

The Great Brown Hope, written by Isaac Gonzalez (Community), centers on Nick, a college dropout who moves back in with his disappointed family in San Diego.

As for Derbez, he’ll next star in the feature Latin Lover, which will be his first English-language starring role. Ken Marino (Marry Me) will direct.

His other previous on-screen roles in the U.S. include the short-lived CBS comedy Rob and the Adam Sandler movie Jack and Jill.
