Sense8 (Friday, June 5, Netflix)

Lana and Andy Wachowski were once all-powerful filmmakers, responsible for the wildly successful Matrix franchise. But the siblings’ more recent outings—Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas, and Jupiter Ascending—have failed to rouse critics, let alone draw audiences to the box office. That makes the duo’s latest move, their first foray into television, all the more interesting.

Sense8, bowing today on Netflix with 12 episodes, is a sci-fi thriller about eight people from across the planet who are curiously connected after they all have a vision that enables them to communicate with one another. Throughout the series, they’ll try to figure out what it’s all about, while an antagonistic organization attempts to murder them, of course. If that doesn’t sound like classic Wachowski ambition, we don’t know what does.
