Grace of Monaco Brings Nicole Kidman to Lifetime
Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein had high hopes for Grace of Monaco, his lush biopic starring Nicole Kidman as late actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly. So why did the film fail to get a U.S. theatrical release and end up on Lifetime? Blame the critics. Grace was savaged when it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last year, with Variety calling it “as dramatically inert as star Nicole Kidman’s frigid cheek muscles” and London’s The Guardian tagging the movie “so awe-inspiringly wooden that it is basically a fire risk.” Just slightly kinder was the U.K.’s Financial Times, noting, “If you lock up your brain and throw away the key, the film is bearable.” According to a Lifetime rep, no one associated with Grace will talk about it. Now that’s a royal mess.
