What To Know

  • Scott Jennings praised Donald Trump’s 1,300-word rant against Bill Maher as “sort of miraculous.”
  • The rant followed Maher’s second White House dinner with the president.
  • Despite the positive dinner, Trump attacked Maher after taking offense at comments made on Real Time.

While many wondered why Donald Trump would spend 1,300 words ranting about Bill Maher, CNN’s Scott Jennings praised the president’s essay-length rant as “miraculous.”

Trump’s rant came after Maher returned to the White House earlier this month for his second dinner with the president. Maher opened up about the meeting on last Friday’s (October 23) Real Time, saying of Trump, “When he’s in that White House, he looks you in the eye, he never interrupts, he never gets mad, he listens.”

The comedian also hit back at his critics, saying, “Yeah, I did it again, b***hes. I know! I’m the bad guy because I go and say face-to-face to the man the things you write in articles he’ll never read, but okay. You know what? F*** you. I like these dinners.”

Trump previously told reporters it was a “great” and “very informative dinner,” saying of Maher, “I tell you what, he likes me a lot more than people understand. And I actually like him. It was a good dinner. We talked about everything.”

However, just 48 hours later, the president launched a scathing attack on Maher after taking issue with what he said on Friday’s Real Time. “Let’s talk about this COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSER, Bill Maher,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He’s got a Low Rated Show on equally Low Rated HBO, which was once, long ago, a Network of Quality and Excitement — But that’s all gone. It’s not ‘HOT’ anymore!”

On Monday’s (October 26) edition of CNN NewsNight, guest host Michael Smerconish asked Jennings why Trump spent so many words talking about this amid much more important issues.

“I mean, our president has a lot to say about this,” Jennings replied, per Mediaite.

“Why?” Smerconish countered.

“I don’t know, but I think it’s sort of miraculous that the president of the United States issues such detailed missives about all sorts of things going on in our culture,” the conservative commentator added.

Jennings continued, “He does the same thing in front of the press when they come and ask him questions. He goes on at length about things. You can call Donald Trump a lot of things. One thing you can never say about him is we don’t know what’s on his mind.”

“What’s left of his mind,” Democratic commentator Van Jones quipped.

“Oh, come on,” Jennings fired back before adding that he “kind of likes” Maher. “I mean, Bill Maher has been basically a rational actor. I used to not like him that much, but he has become a rational actor trying to tell the left, like my buddy Van here, trying to pull them back from the brink of insanity,” he said. “A very rational guy. So, I don’t know why he’s so upset with him.”
