CNN NewsNight erupted into laughter Wednesday night (September 16) after Scott Jennings defended President Donald Trump‘s tariffs with a confusing hypothetical.

The panel, which included former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, The View cohost Ana Navarro, academic Lauren A. Wright, and Democratic political strategist Bakari Sellers, was discussing Trump’s import tariffs and their impact on the U.S. economy.

Blasio argued that the tariffs cost American consumers because overseas businesses raise prices to offset the higher import charges. That’s when Jennings jumped in to defend the tariffs, saying, “I have a sincere question for you because you all very concerned about the tariffs as taxes.”

The conservative commentator then presented his hypothetical, stating, “If Donald Trump tomorrow said, ‘I’ll trade you elimination of all tariffs for elimination of all corporate income taxes,’ would you take the deal?”

“What is that hypothetical, Scott?” host Abby Phillip asked as the rest of the panel reacted in confusion.

“If my grandmother had wheels, she’d be a bicycle,” Navarro quipped as the panel laughed in Jennings’ face.

“What’s the point of that hypothetical, Scott?” Phillip asked again as the panel kept laughing.

“The point is this… you’re mad about certain taxes,” Jennings tried to argue before being drowned out by even more laughter. He eventually got his point out, saying, “Every Democrat constantly argues for tax increases on corporations while arguing against tariffs. It makes no sense.”

“Scott, you’re the conservative at this table. That’s why this is so comedic,” Phillip added.

An agitated-looking Jennings then turned to Sellers, asking, “Do you not understand this? It’s a very simple argument.”

Phillip continued, “You have to bend over backwards to explain the conservative rationale for tariffs, and I don’t see you doing it. You keep telling me this is what Trump believes, but you know what else Trump believes? If you stop trading with countries, you make money. That’s not how that works and that’s also not how tariffs work.”
