Nancy Guthrie Update: Retired FBI Agent Says ‘Today’ Segment Likely Played Role in Abduction

Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing nearly eight months after her abduction in Tucson, Arizona — and a retired FBI agent recently addressed a theory that a Today segment played a role in her disappearance.

In an interview on Brian Entin Investigates published on September 28, former FBI special agent Steve Moore chatted with NewsNation senior national correspondent Brian Entin.

“I was looking back at when Savannah Guthrie visited Tucson for this Today show shoot, which was a big deal in Tucson,” Entin said. “And the shoot was on October 17; it didn’t end up airing until November 5. But this was just months before Nancy vanished on February 1.”

When asked if Moore thinks the Today segment “could be a piece on this puzzle,” the retired FBI agent admitted, “Yeah, I actually do.”

Moore explained, “The timing is too coincidental to have been completely random. I guess I should say it’s possible that it was random. But it fits with somebody who saw an opportunity, and planned to take advantage of that opportunity, and executed on their plan… I think you have to give a lot of credence to the fact that that is a strong possibility.”

“Do you think the FBI is looking into that?” Entin asked.

“I’d be surprised if they weren’t,” Moore said. “FBI agents really dislike coincidence. The fact that that aired and two to three months later, Nancy went missing is very coincidental. So it comes across to an agent as something that needs to be resolved.”

Additionally, Moore pointed out, “The problem is, unless the person came in contact with Savannah or Nancy during the filming, what you’ve got is somebody watching them… If the thought is that Nancy was taken by somebody who is obsessed, say, with Savannah, or felt that Savannah would be an opportunity for financial gain, they would have been watching Nancy on TV all the time. So they would have seen this entire segment. And if the stars aligned and they said, ‘Wait a minute, I’m from Tucson too. That person is not far from me.’ That’s certainly a strong possibility.”

He added, of the Today segment featuring Nancy, “It could also have zeroed in Nancy a little bit more, as far as neighborhood… Certainly, by the restaurants you go to, the places you see, you’re at least in one part of Tucson. And that may have helped somebody zero in on where Nancy might have been.”

Nancy was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home on the evening of January 31. Although investigators released photos of a masked suspect on her front porch (“Porch Guy”) and published alleged ransom notes, no suspect has been named in the case. Meanwhile, Savannah has also offered a $1 million reward for information leading to an arrest.
