‘The Voice’ Recap: Adam Nabs a 4-Chair Turn With His First-In Button

The Blind Auditions continued on the September 23 episode of The Voice. Before getting into the next batch of performances, though, the cliffhanger about who Lexi Stephens chose as her coach was answered.

Lexi received chair turns from all four coaches (Queen Latifah, Riley Green, Kelly Clarkson, and Adam Levine) at the end of the September 22 episode, but viewers were left in the dark about who she chose. Now, we know that she’s opted for Levine, although she admittedly came in thinking she’d pick Clarkson.

With that out of the way, scroll down for a recap of what happened when the next group of artists took the stage.

Kyle Davis

First up was Kyle Davis, the oldest on the show at the age of 61. He sang “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel, earning chair turns from all four coaches.

“What the hell have you been doing?” Clarkson wondered. Kyle revealed that he’d been busy raising his kids, but noted that he used to have a record deal.

“You have one of the voices like a Peter Gabriel, one of the voices like a Bono. It’s one of those voices that’s so special,” she promised, before “swearing” that she could help Kyle win.

Levine then had his turn, noting that “In Your Eyes” is such a difficult song to cover. He also said he believes he and Kyle have a lot of taste in common, which would make him the best coach. Green said Kyle is “what this show is about” because he’s a “voice that’s worthy of being heard.”

Kyle had a tough decision to make, but he chose Clarkson as his coach.

Kenna Elpers

Kenna Elpers, a 23-year-old singer who once opened for Green, came to the show hoping to reconnect with him as a coach. She sang Chris Stapleton‘s “White Horse” for her audition, and Green ended up pushing his button at the last minute, following Queen Latifah’s early turn.

“You were amazing. I turned my chair really quickly,” Latifah said. “I could feel a little bit of nervousness, but I felt like it was going somewhere, and it did. You got stronger and stronger.”

Green assured Kenna that having nerves is natural. “I could feel it get better as it went,” he told her, adding that she’ll only improve with more time in the competition. Latifah made sure that Kenna knew singing and performing is in her lane, even though country is Green’s wheelhouse.

While Latifah made a good pitch, the writing was on the wall when Kenna brought up her history with Green, and then she chose him as her coach.

Morgan Lett

Morgan Lett hit the stage with a powerful rendition of “I’m Goin’ Down” for her Blind Audition. Latifah was first to turn her chair, and Green followed later on.

It was once again a battle of the rookies, with Latifah and Green fighting it out. This time, the win went to Latifah, though.

Green told Morgan, “There were notes I couldn’t even dream of touching and you didn’t touch them, you went past them.” Latifah had the winning pitch, though. “You went places I was not expecting. You did it your way, which tells me you can sing all kinds of songs your way,” she said.

Brooklyn Marie

A 14-year-old singer named Brooklyn Marie was the next to perform. She sang “Traitor” by Olivia Rodrigo, hoping that the coaches could feel her “emotional connection.”

Queen Latifah was immediately intrigued once Brooklyn opened her mouth and she pushed her button. Clarkson also jumped in at the end of the performance. The coaches could not believe how young Brooklyn was.

“I kind of wish I had turned around because it’s just amazing to see how much is happening for you at such a young age. I’m really happy you’re on this show,” Levine told Brooklyn.

Latifah said Brooklyn’s voice “sounded so special to me right away,” also praising her for choosing a difficult song and “making it yours.” Clarkson, meanwhile, added, “I do love working a lot with the younger talent because there’s a freedom with your spirits.” As usual, she also made sure to point out that she’s been a young woman in a singing competition and has won The Voice before.

As Latifah and Clarkson tried to lure Brooklyn to their teams, she made her choice, letting them know, “It’s always been Kelly!”

Conor Pederson

Nashville resident Conor Pederson performed next. He sang Shawn Mendes‘ “Mercy” for his audition, but did not get a chair turn.

“That was a fantastic performance,” Latifah said. “You have such great control over your vocals. I know you didn’t get a chair turn today, but believe that you were dope.”

Green told Conor that he had timing issues, but assured him that his voice is “great,” and Levine said, “Come back and do an acoustic song. The most important thing in the Blinds is comfort. Let us hear all the beautiful things in your voice that we didn’t get to hear this time around and I think we’ll have success.”

Amanda Mikkel

The final audition of the night was from Amanda Mikkel, who sang “Moon River.” Levine turned around after just two notes, with Clarkson following shortly after. Latifah and Green also eventually jumped in.

“I turned around first,” Levine pointed out. “You have the purity and the luxury of just having a beautiful voice, which means no matter what you’re singing, it’s going to be beautiful. I connected instantly with the soulfulness and the softness.”

Clarkson praised Amanda for being willing to sleep in her car just to make her dream come true. “Your voice is unlike other voices. You are special,” she gushed. Latifah told Amanda she sounded “absolutely gorgeous,” and Green said, “That was the first time someone’s come out here and it didn’t feel like an audition. It felt like a performance and we’re just lucky enough to watch you.”

Levine made sure he was the one to get Amanda on his team by pushing his First-In button, automatically becoming her coach.
