In honor of the late Billy Miller‘s birthday on September 17, his General Hospital costar and dear friend, Kelly Monaco, revealed the letter he sent to her after his exit from the ABC soap in 2019.

Monaco said Miller, who died in 2023, had wanted her to post the letter, but she didn’t at the time. “I know he wanted anyone who’s ever supported his work and or got to know him as a friend, to read this letter. He is a gift that keeps giving,” she added.

The actress shared a photo of Miller’s letter, which began, “With a slight air of sadness, it is time to ponder what ‘Goodbye’ means. However, instead of dwelling on what is gone and sure to be missed, there is another way. Maybe our goodbye is really a remembrance of love felt, an appreciation for lives shared, and the lifelong reminisces that come from embraces given and received.”

He continued, “Maybe our goodbye is an earnest hope for the brightest path forward for us all. Maybe our goodbye is honoring growth and lessons learned. Now, instead of sadness, I am filled with gratitude for all your support, encouragement, and every emotion shared. I cherish the journey we have taken together. Thank you for following me into your homes and lives. With every ounce of myself, I thank you for being you.”

The Daytime Emmy winner ended his letter with, “I would be remiss in this crazy, unpredictable world we all love so much if I did not hold out the possibility that maybe our GOODBYE is really… UNTIL NEXT TIME.” Miller personally signed the letter.

Miller and Monaco met when The Young and the Restless actor joined General Hospital in 2014 as Jason Morgan. Miller and Monaco, who played Sam McCall, worked closely together for years. When Steve Burton returned to GH, Miller’s role was retconned as Jason’s twin brother, Drew Cain.

Miller died by suicide on September 15, 2023. He was 43. His mother released a statement after Miller’s death that revealed he had been diagnosed with bipolar depression: “He fought a long hard valiant battle with bipolar depression for years. He did everything he could to control the disease. He loved his family, his friends and his fans but in the end the disease won the fight and he surrendered his life.”
